The Streets and Squares of Helsinki

in #photography8 years ago

Upon arriving in Helsinki last Wednesday I took a long walk through the city. ‘What a lovely city this is!’, I thought along the way – and not for the first time. I may be living in Sweden, but I love the capital city of Finland with all my heart. Its lovely parks, its open squares, its beautiful buildings, and its charming streets… In today’s post I want to share my love with you, by publishing some photos of Helsinki’s lovely streets and squares that I took on my walk.

But first…

Silja Line ferry boat
A boat similar to the one that I took to Finland this time. Two years ago my parents and I were on this very boat, pictured above, when we took a cruise from Stockholm to Helsinki.

Helsinki’s Cathedral
One of the two main Cathedrals of Helsinki, the Protestant one, so beautiful in the rays of the morning sun. The other Cathedral is Orthodox, the legacy of the Russian Imperial period in the city’s history.

A steep street with beautiful houses
A cool cobble-paved steep streets that reminded me of San Francisco. Also, check the beautiful houses and the diversity of architectural styles. That’s Helsinki, y’all!

I don’t know the purpose of this mysterious structure on one of the city squares, but I thought it looked cool, so I snapped a photo.

Thank you for joining me on this Steem-powered walk through the heart of Helsinki! As an added bonus, since you have actually scrolled through the photos all the way down here, I am sharing a picture from Porvoo – a charming town featured in my previous post:

That stone-faced building is really cool. I like the circular tower part that juts out a bit, looks like a neat place to look out from.

@oleg326756 I've never been to Finland nor any of the Scandanavian countries so thank you for taking me through these pics, keep em' comin' wonder what's the culture like?

the architecture on the 3rd pic is cool and the painting on the Indian brickwork in the city center with what looks like Arabic or Turkish lamps? - an eye catcher

Helsinki is really interesting, because it’s half-way between Sweden and Russia; Finland itself used to belong to both those empires of the past era. One can clearly see the influence from both East and West in the city’s architecture. If one had to generalise, one could say that Helsinki has traits from both Stockholm and St. Petersburg. Also, considering a large number of Russian tourists visiting the city, one can hear Russian language all around Helsinki.

Yes, my guess about that building is that it has something to do with the city’s water infrastructure. That’s why the jars-themed mosaic on its wall. It’s just a guess, though. :)

@oleg326756 great info out here now :)
keep taking us there :)

Fascinating!
