The Huge Wattle Goat Moth
This very large, and rather fat, moth is the Wattle Goat Moth Endoxyla lituratus. It came to my moth light a couple of nights ago. It's wing span measures 150 mm (6 "). The larvae of these moths eat wood and spend years boring their way through Wattle trees (Acacia spp.). The Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos will tear the branches open with their secateur like bills to feed on them.
The photos below were taken with a Canon 7D and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens. Don't forget to click the images to see a larger (1600 wide) version.
