This portrait of my nephew (the ginger haired boy) and my son (the black-eyed boy) was taken on an outing to the zoo in Asheboro, North Carolina. I had the boys stand like that so I could get a good portrait of them together. I wanted to capture the moment for them.
The boys are six months apart in age, my nephew being the elder. In the moment captured in this portrait of them, they were each other’s first best friends. I knew life and geographical distance would take them on vastly different journeys. I knew too that their close friendship might not hold up. Sadly, they have drifted apart, though they still have fond memories of each other. My nephew is a farmer’s son and, at that time, wanted a farmer’s future; now, he has plans to study agricultural science when he goes to college after high school. My son, even then, was on a path of brilliance with technology and even then knew he wanted to be a bio-medical technologies engineer; he’s still on that path and will begin medical studies when he starts high school this Fall, in a magnate school Health Sciences Academy.
