St. Giles Church - Abandoned Photo JOURNEY blog
Built in 1912, St Giles Presbyterian Church was one a busy and bustling church in central Hamilton. An absolute beautiful Neo-Gothic church adorned with fabulous stained glass windows.
Amalgamation is something happening to a lot of church congregations over the past few years. Even decades. St. Giles, as seen here, is no special penny to save. In 2013 the congregation from St Giles and Centenary joined forces and were cornered into a mindful, awful decision; two large and expensive buildings, one congregation. What building to tear down?
Ultimately, Centenary and St. Giles formed New Vision United Church and with no historical designation, the decision was made to remain at the Centenary building, and tear down St. Giles.
Centenary Church is older, being built on the 100th anniversary of the very first Methodist congregation in North America, hence the name.
As we tour the building, you will very easily notice the amount of destruction here. Luckily so, that is due to everything inside the church being auctioned off for other uses. Far better that than having all of it trashed in the dump. All accouterments, wood panels, stairs cases, glass, pews, all being repurposed. Now, until November she sits cold and empty.
No more songs to be sung, no more organ air flowing through the pipes. No more worship, not a prayer for this lonely old soul. After 107 years strong, may you be a tough one to tear down!
Finally, I bring you to the most prominent part. Very rarely seen, but extremely well known to those who heed the call of worship, the sacred St. Giles Bell Tower. The bells were cast in Baltimore, Maryland by the McShane Bell Foundry in 1912.
The fate of these beautiful bronze beasts isn't quite clear yet. I'm certain we will find out come November 2019 when the wrecking ball moves on in.
Mike

Wow what a beautiful space, and such a juxtaposition between the gorgeous stained glass and the destruction inside. Pretty please use the #creativecoin tag on your awesome photography posts, my vote is worth something like 50 times more $ in creative coin than it is in Steem and I would really like to be able to reward you better. You don't have to do anything else beside use that tag to earn a second crypto (Creative Coin Crypto / CCC) on top of your Steem earnings. Feel free to ask any questions. Cheers
