University of South Florida Spring Football Game
Spring games are such a tease, but they always give you a good idea of what's to come!
The main bulk of my income stems from working in freelance live sports production. I just so happened to get a call recently to work the spring football game for my hometown school, the University of South Florida. Since it was simply a spring game it was by no means a large production, but it's always fun for me to work any USF games.
Our talent for this broadcast was long-time 'Voice of the Bulls' play-by-play commentator Jim Louk (right) and 9-year NFL veteran and 1982 All-American safety at Penn State Mark Robinson. Above you can see them taping the pre-game open segment down on the corner of the field. Once our producer and director are happy with the open they break-off and head back up to the booth to get ready for the show.
Above you can see the view they have from the booth, nothing fancy because the game was held on Corbett Field, the USF soccer stadium. However, over 3,000 people came out to brave the sweltering sun to enjoy the festivities. In fact, you can see almost every person in attendance looking towards the skies in the shot above. This is because before our National Anthem was scheduled to play prior to kick off, there were some special treats in store for the fans and they were falling from the skies.
Members of a Special Operations group from SOCOM at the local MacDill Air Force Base were scheduled to parachute down onto the field to kick things off. It was looking like the jumps might be scrapped due to high winds but thankfully they happened and these seasoned professionals pulled off their landings without a hitch.
Finally it was time for kick off! I don't know about any of you but I've been waiting patiently for college ball to start back up and it's almost here....such a tease!

When I lived in USA I liked to go on the big field next to my house and admire the young kids who worked hard. My friend's kids were in the team. That was amazing experience.
Nice shots! It almost makes me miss playing at the HS football games. Playing halftime was kind of fun...
One time, I put blistering-hot chili pepper on a saxophonist's reed beforehand. It was a tad evil, maybe, but hilarious! After trying to get the trombone layers (me) in trouble, he did sort of deserve it!
No outdoor football here, yet. We still have a foot of snow on the ground and, tomorrow, we're supposed to get another 6-8 inches.
USF has an award winning band, Herd of Thunder!

You all had a big win in the Birmingham Bowl against Texas Tech. Charlie Strong looks to be a good coach for them. To bad he had a tough time at UT Austin.
Of course UT Knoxville is my Alma Mater ( Tennessee which is the "real" UT lol) and we have a new coach who was Offensive Coordinator (Jeremy Pruitt ) with Alabama under Saban. So looking forward to that :)
