The Moon seldom illuminates a rain shower with bright enough light to produce a lunar rainbow, or ‘moonbow’, like this one spotted over Monteverde, Costa Rica, by Vincent Kempgens. Yet another great reason for getting to know your long exposure settings and getting hold of a reasonable tripod! With improved technologies of digital cameras and excellent editing software for tweaks and compositing shots we can now get results hitherto undreamed of! So point those cameras to the night sky and see what you can find!

The photo below shows the rainbow has a full spectrum of colours, but a moonbow seen with the naked eye appears just white. The colours are there, but the cone cells in our eyes, which are the ones that detect colour, function poorly in low-light conditions. At night we rely on our eyes’ rod cells, which detect in monochrome. Only with a long-exposure photograph like this are the hidden colours of this rare nighttime spectacle revealed.
