Costa Rica - Generating 97% Of Its Electricity From Renewable Sources!

Costa Rica has many charms: the beautiful beaches, the incredible jungles and wildlife. But another thing we can be extremely proud of is the fact that Costa Rica is one of the most eco friendly countries on Earth! Generating 97% of its electricity from renewable sources, Costa Rica is aiming to become the first carbon-neutral country in the world by 2021. Along with our hydro electric dams, there are geothermal projects operating from our string of active volcanoes, also wind, biomass and solar energy plants.

Pictured below is the Pirris Hydro Electric Dam in the Southern part of San Jose Province. Heavy rain only increases profits here! We are blessed with plentiful rain so there is never a shortage in this department!

An excellent example of eco tourism at its finest Veragua Rainforest Eco-Adventure situated less an hour from the port of Limon in the central Caribbean mountains of Costa Rica. By increasing their use of solar energy they are now using 100% green, clean, self produced energy!

We can all be greener and more energy efficient. There are many ways we can help the planet and our environment. don't leave devices plugged in or charging that you are not using. Dedicate a power strip to tv/consoles/accessories that you can turn off when you leave the house or go to bed.
        Convert to LED bulbs which require much less wattage than the CFL or Incandescent light bulbs. The old style Incandescent bulb is the most inefficient of them all and to avoided if at all possible! CFLs are four times more efficient and last up to 10 times longer than incandescents so are good option. When selecting a CFL or LED bulb you can get either cool or warm variations which refers to the colour they will emit. Color temperatures over 5000 K are called "cool colors" (bluish white), while lower color temperatures (2700–3000 K) are called "warm colors" (yellowish white through red). I generally prefer to use the warm (2700–3000 K) bulbs as they give a light closer to candles or the old incandescent light. The cool bulbs over 5000 K are better suited for commercial shops or industrial spaces that need near daylight conditions.
        I have used macbook pro laptop instead of a desk top for the last seven years for the energy saving benefits. This was initially prompted because I had moved to the hills of Spain and had only limited electricity produced from my solar panels. Five years living off grid was an excellent education in energy conservation and an eye opener to the incredible waste by standard "grid supplied" electricity users. Now having moved to Costa Rica I am paying utility bills again! But not for long as I hope to harvest energy from hydro and solar very shortly. The rising cost of electricity has brought the need to conserve energy for all. Nobody likes big power bills, or destruction to the planet by unscrupulous power generators so we must all save as much power as we can and look into wind, solar and hydro to power, or at least augment the power needs of us all.
        Alternative energy can be costly to get into but from personal experience the rewards greatly out weigh the initial outlay. It is hugely satisfying to know that you have created your own power and that no Nuclear or coal fired power station were needed to be involved!
