Expired and Exposed: Svema Foto 65

This is a sorta-like a sequel to a post I previously wrote about this unique film.

Film talk - photo walk

Check it out for a bit of context and to learn more about the history of this Ukrainian film.

When I was gifted some Soviet-era Свема (Svema) film, I was unsure about the quality. How was it kept? (Refrigerator or freezer-held is best to preserve the film) And after a bit of research I learned that for a while Svema 35mm film was shipped WITHOUT a cartridge to hold it; the photographer must load this film into their own bulk cartridge. Some of you digital obsessed kitty cats might not know, the only thing keeping this film from instantly exposing in my very fingers at this instant - was a black paper wrapper.

Luckily, each of my rolls came in in a sealed foil pack, inside the film already spooled in a reusable (bulk) cartridge.

In the car, upon arrival to my first destination, I loaded the first test roll into the Canon and I was ready to go.

Before the unveiling... a few quick notes on development for the nerds experienced film developers.

I used a modified Two Step Caffenol Developer:
40ml Water, 7 rounded Teaspoons of Instant Coffee
100ml Water, 4 Teaspoons of Washing Soda, 2 Teaspoons of Vitamin C

  • Put the Coffee mix into the developing tank, agitate once per second for the first minute
  • leave it for another 2 minutes, agitate for 10 seconds every minute.
  • Pour out 100ml of Water and add the Washing Soda mix.
  • Agitate once per second for the first minute
  • Agitate for 10 seconds every minute for 9 miutes
  • Stand development for another 4 minutes.

I used a chemical stop. Kodak film fix. Hype clear wash. Then photoflo.

In the future I will try purely a stand development (without agitation), and most likely a different developer like Rodinal 100:1. Also will be testing a different caffenol concoction, maybe by modifying the above recipe (again).

Behold, my dissatisfying results...

That’s it.

Seriously. That’s it.

The rest of the roll was blank - exposed.

Initially I was not the slightest bit comfortable with the results. I summed it all up as a failure. I have some theories as to why the roll didn’t ‘come out’ as expected... the reusable cartridge the Svema came in was obviously old, and must not have been light-tight.

What we see here is the final frames of the roll... the very end of the film strip found at the core of the spool. Which makes me think it was protected enough to squeeze these images out.

The filmstrip is so cool, it shows a man and his home dissolving into stardust, what could be more poetic? @AmeliaBartlett

Ok, so I guess you could say it’s growing on me...

Is it mold, light leaks, and film degradation that produced these celestial results? I don’t know 🤷‍♂️. Amelia laughs at me “almost everyone tries to mimic film and errors and serendipitous film happenings on their computers”. So yeah, I’ve achieved something on film, thru a number of variables, that other artists only accomplish digitally. Did it produce what I wanted? No. I can almost hear Amelia say “what did you want from a 30+ year old film, anyway?” It’s true; I used to expect these results from expired stocks. So what, it did not produce something I am completely happy with. But, that doesn’t make it a failure. It’s part of my journey.

Hey, my name is Tang. 👋

Most people know me for being a bus dweller - I converted a school bus into a custom RV, but I’m also a film photographer, dreadlocked Legolas, and a dad to a dog named Hobo. Right now, I'm experimenting with vintage cameras and expired film, learning how to mountain bike, and sharing my adventures along the way.

Into vintage cameras? Check out my latest Gear Talk

First time on my blog? Say hi below. 🤙

These are incredible.... absolutely freaking beautiful.

I am so moved by them @hobotang. I am actually just - emotional looking at them and reading the post....

so happy to drop this small little appreciation on your work...
this has been...

Oooh I like the little logo picture, was half expecting a

.

That's an amazing experiment :D I can see the romanticism in this too. On the other hand, I had a blank roll once too and was a bit disappointed as well :') We tend to want to show others what we made, right? But I love your portrait :D

Exactly, no matter the results really, we crave to share some results - not... a blank roll, lol. It’s kinda funny how these couple images have inspired me more than entire rolls of images have in the past.

cool! nothing lost, only a couple neat images and a little experience gained! ! into stardust!

Yes! So eloquently put. Thanks for dropping by with the positive energy ✨

WOW, truly impressed! I never tried to mix my own developer, didn't even know it was possible! Nor have I seen a loose film roll before! Been a few years since I developed my own film, but this post makes me want to get into it again!
I can imagine the disappointment with that ruined film strip but that photo is just mesmerizing!
Actually I just finished a film that I bought for 1€ in a second hand shop in Spain and I also don't know anything about how old it is and so on, so it's gonna be interesting to see it developed!

Hey thank you for the kind words ✌️

You’d be surprised at the variety of concoctions that will develop black and white film if mixed correctly - everything from coffee ☕️ , or wine 🍷 , to beet juice 🥤 , and nevertheless purchased chemicals. I am merely novice in the voodoo art of creating the right soup strong enough for the job, yet gentle enough on the ancient expired stuff.

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment! I dig your profile. Now, knock some dust off that film camera of yours and get to some shooting! 🤘

i am using it, but still on more special occasions. like you i think, i am also living in a mobile home and the last film i havent developed yet because we didnt stay long enough in one place to get it developed at the shops that always tale at least a week! so maybe i should start trying myself again! I should have that box somewhere in my fathers house! but do you also develop color yourself or just bw? the one i need developed is color but the one i have in now is bw

I have done both. Color developing comes in many forms and emulsions, I’ve only done C41 which is most common. I usually send out for anything else...

This is really quite unique, it really did work because what you created was something quite unreplicable in any modern standard. And that banner you have at the end of the post - just amazing you could use that as a page break for every single post.

Hi Below. Not sure who is below me. Hi anyway, #hobotangmademedoit

It’s true because (it’s like I mentioned earlier) these couple images have inspired me more than other rolls have in the past. It’s awesome. I have another roll of film in the camera right now, very excited to share the results. 🤓

PS #hobomademedoit say what? Lol

As you have said, definitely poetic. The picture is astounding and full of life yet soft and magical. Love how it turned out!

Thank you so much ☺️

I really love that first image. Soooooo cool.
Also, first time to your blog, hi!

Hey, thanks for dropping by! I took a look at your page quickly - I love some of your flower and nature photography. Keep an eye out for some more film posts or just some sassy photography blabber.

It looks like the Universe, you have been wrapped in stars... And then we spend time editing our polished clean digital pics to infuse them with imperfections, or stars 💮

✨ The stars are such beautiful imperfections on these images - you’re right, and probably couldn’t be replicated on film even if I tried 😆. Thanks for dropping by

Congratulations, @hobotang. This shot got you the first place on today's #monomad Daily Picks. Thanks for participating!

Whoop Whoop

Check it out fam - I’m a winner! Lol 😂
