Toy Review: Hasbro Black Series First Order Star Destroyer

There aren't that many collectible ships based on The Force Awakens' new Star Destroyer. So far, the only toy companies I know who produced them are Hot Wheels and Hasbro. Here in my Star Wars collection is Hasbro's Black Series First Order Star Destroyer. The ship made its debut in Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens. There weren't that many beauty shots from the film, so Hasbro has provided us with something to look at on all angles. The ship is mostly made of die-cast metal and is mostly painted white with a tinge of light blue. The ship only about 4 inches long, in line with most of the ships in this series.

In canon, they are classified as the Resurgent-class and are, for the moment, the flagships of the newly-born First Order. They are twice the size of an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, more than 3 kilometers from bow to stern. This class of ship probably serves as the midpoint between the Imperial- and the monstrous Executor-class Star Destroyers in terms of not only size, but also of technology and design. For sure, no one forgot that scene in Return of the Jedi where the A-wing fighter crashes into the bridge of the Executor, causing the latter to lose control and crash into the second Death Star via its gravity well. The First Order learned from the Battle of Endor and designed the Resurgent-class with a sunken bridge, offering it more protection.

The paint job is crisp although in terms of detail, not so much. For some reason, many American toy companies could not replicate the detail Japanese toy makers can provide even at this scale. Well, in my opinion, I can't agree to the statement that the Black Series toy line targets children. With the level of detail in the Black Series action figures, they obviously are intended for toy collectors. The recesses that mark the paneling are too thick, though for the most part, the model captures the very look of the First Order's flagship.

I like the display stand that exhibits a "see-through" or "invisible" effect which works on white surfaces.

The ship costs $10 at our local Toys 'R Us. When The Force Awakens was released, this ship along with the Millennium Falcon was sold out in a matter of days. Restocks couldn't even keep up with the demand, so I'm not entirely sure if this is still available more than a year after the film's release.
