Howdy,
It's been an absurdly cold week, here in Minnesota. While it was slightly "warmer" in the southern part of the state, we still saw wind chill temperatures below -50ºF (about -46ºC). The hard freeze had a dramatic effect on the large falls at Minneopa State Park.
Here is a before and after comparison:
Before the FreezeThat's well over 10' higher. Taking geometry into consideration, that's a huge amount of additional ice. The brutal temperatures not only created this monster ice block, but also froze the stream enough to walk across. That was especially handy, since the snow was over knee-high on the shore and only about ankle-deep across the ice. My foot did break through in one spot, but only because there were layers of ice. My foot never got wet.
After
I hope to get out to Triple Falls again, soon, but we've had almost eight inches of fresh snow on top of the hard freeze, and the access road may be impassible for awhile. For now, there's plenty of homework to work on.

WOW! So cold?! I've never experienced something like that. I wonder how it feels.. can you breath normally or do you get short of breath in such conditions?
Your photos are very nice and it's interesting to see the comparison. It feels so surreal to see so much ice and snow as in the part of Switzerland where I'm based it's quite warm for February. We barely have minus temperatures...
Thanks! Fortunately, the cold has subsided and a warm front is coming in. When it's cold like it was earlier this week, it hurts a little to breathe and your teeth actually get cold. I have a ski mask that helps a bit.
It's good that it's not that cold there because people over there are such wimps they wouldn't be able to handle the cold. lol.

Wow, I saw that there was a polar vortex and the news was comparing it to Mars and that you were colder than the North Pole. At least it can't be blamed on Canada...this time hehe. The only time I've ever experienced that temp was on the Alaska highway (my husband used to maintain a section of it) I remember my Gortex jacket feeling like it was brittle and complaining that the snot in my nose had formed icicles lol. Glad you have a ski mask! And hope you don't have a nuclear reactor that froze up and shut down like in New Jersey! AND of course, I hope Vern is toasty warm by a fire :)
From what my parents say, Vern spent most of his time by the fireplace or up on their bed. He's a bit spoiled. He didn't enjoy being outside at all, but when you gotta go...
Speaking of Canada, I heard nothing of the temps in Manitoba. It had to have been pretty awful up there, but they're likely better prepared.

Don't freeze yourself to death going out to get pictures of some frozen water. Stay safe.
I waited to go back to the bottom until the cold front started to move out. It was up to -2°f, which is a lot more comfortable.

Thanks. I watered for the warmer air to push in before clinching down to the waterfall. They're predicting almost 40°f tomorrow, now. That's almost seventy degrees in under 48 hours. Crazy weather...

We woke up to a layer of ice over everything this morning in Mabnkato. It took 20 minutes to get my windshield warm enough to be able to scrape it off. It didn't want to scrape away! But, yeah... At least it's not -30ºF!
We got a bunch of rain this morning, which I am glad that it waited until after our temperatures warms up so that it was rain and not ice. I hope the ice has melted away and is not causing a lot of damage up there. It's 43 degrees here right now.

Thanks! This one has enough water flow that it didn't completely freeze up. You could hear the water through the ice, churning and gurgling.

This one has enough moving water that it would take a couple weeks of that kind of cold to completely freeze up. The amount of moving water was pretty low on the last day of the freeze, though.
Howdy today sir fotosdenada! Well, down here the plants are growing and the grass is shooting up like it's Spring already, yesterday was sunshine and 80 degrees, today the same. When does Spring come up there? And how are classes going by the way?
The classes are a lot of work at the moment. I just realized I missed a deadline and am behind, plus have a couple extra things going on. Steemit's been badly neglected.
Spring usually comes in mid April, if we're lucky. We've had freak snowstorms in May, but that's very abnormal. Usually, May is fairly warm and June is getting into summer weather. May and June can bring some spectacular thunderstorms.
Howdy sir fotosdenada! Hey do you go out and get close to those storms like some of those maniac people do, to get good lightening pictures? He had 80 degrees today and by the end of this month winter will pretty much be over.
I don't go after tornadoes and stay inside for the more intense storms, but I have been trying to get a photo of the Herman the German national monument getting struck by lightening. So far, two years' worth of storms and no luck.
