Times Square New York City - The city that never sleeps

in #photography6 years ago

Well let's face it, if you are near times square there is really no way you are ever getting any sleep. The signs are so bright it is actually brighter than daylight at night and you can see it from blocks away.

Last week I spent five days in NYC. It was awesome. It's not my first rodeo though, I have been to New York many times in my life. When I was little we lived in America and we went, back then my parents took my sister and I up to the observation deck of the WTC twin towers. That was the 80s. I barely remember it .. this time I went and photographed the memorial. I'm not gonna lie, I choked back tears reading the names, knowing some of my friends narrowly escaped being names on that memorial themselves. Anyway, that's a story for a different post.

We flew to New York early in the morning from Scotland. We got up at 3am and headed to the airport in a taxi at 4am. Caught our flight that got delayed more and more making us nervous as our heathrow connection would take off only and hour after we were due to land. So when we did land we headed straight to the next plane and were in fact the last to board once we arrived. stressful!

Upon arrival we took a taxi to the hotel, but our taxi driver was a moron. He didn't know that there was a parade on that had closed all of 5th avenue which we needed to cross to get to the hotel. We spent 3 hours in the taxi and then got dumped on a street nearly 5 blocks away because he ran out of patience and didn't no where to go anymore. Total asshat.

The view from our hotel room

Luckily we arrived eventually but it didn't leave us much time to explore the rest of the day. So we checked out our hotel rooms (the above shot being our room's view - we travelled with my GF's sister and her family).

We got settled in and then decided to go for a bite to eat and to check out Times Square since it was just down the street.

We saw the naked cowboy, he has an entourage of two girls who wander around in nothing but a thong (with NYC written on each butt cheek) .. and no sorry, i didn't photograph them. To be honest, I was rather surprised they were able to get away with it! Americans are usually so conservative about these things.. public nudity? Normally you'd get your ass hauled to jail in a jiffy for that! They did have very nice bottoms though, don't think i didn't notice ;)

So after a meal at Applebees (yeah we are high class!) and a mooch around Times Square we headed back to the hotel for a well earned rest. After all, by that time we had already been up for 20 hours with only a 4 hour sleep the night before! I slept so well that night! Despite all the noise from the traffic ;)

Three hours in a NYC taxi? Must have cost you a bomber!!!!

You'd think so, but actually if you get a taxi from the airport its a flat rate fare + tip so we ended up paying the guy $70. Probably should have given him $80 but we were stingy about the tip because he obviously screwed up in not knowing where he was going or what was happening in the city. My GF's sister was in a different taxi and they had no trouble.
