Color Challenge Wednesday Yellow-- Chanterelle, Jack-o'lantern, and more Honey mushrooms
As I said in Sunday's post, I've decided to make this week's color challenge all about mushrooms, leading up to the promised in-depth post I mentioned in Saturday's Indigo challenge.
The Smooth Chanterelle is cousin to the True Chanterelle which most people find tastier, but I personally couldn't tell the difference. They're called 'smooth' because the underside of the cap is exactly that.
They are bright yellow to light orange in color and vase shaped, and have a symbiotic relationship between their mycelium and a tree's roots, so they don't grow on dead or dying material. They also have a fruity smell rather than the classic mushroom smell like the button mushrooms you get from the store.
(Unfortunately this came out a bit blurry, but I wanted to show it from a different angle)
Next we have the toxic Jack-o'lantern, which is considered a look alike for Chanterelles, though I think they might be more easily confused with True Chanterelles given the gills.
Almost every article you find on these mushrooms will say they glow in the dark, so at first I thought we had misidentified them when they sadly did not. However upon deeper investigation I learned that this is a myth-- I would be happy to hear from someone who has actually seen them do this though!
And lastly we have some Honey Mushrooms.
In yesterday's color challenge I featured honey mushrooms on a tree that were bright orange. For those who missed that post, these are indeed edible, though not sweet as their name suggests (in fact their quite bitter raw, though lose the bitterness when cooked), instead the name comes from the color ranging from orange to a dark tan or light brown.
And that's it for today, I hope you enjoyed it! If you're interested in the other mushrooms from my challenge here are the links:

Wild mushrooms! You have you be careful but ah there is fun to be had ;0)
Oh, it is definitely fun, I've always loved a good scavenger hunt...haha, I really can't wait to post the one for tonight, let's just say I completely lost sight of any professionalism :)
So what you're saying is that the Smooth Chanterelle is a Fake Chanterelle? Haha! I just realized now that I've had this dream of cultivating my own mushroom farm for quite some time now. First the bees, now the mushrooms haha! It seems like interests align!
Ohh yes, do you remember the dream I had about the Chlorella Project? It's still in the back of my mind- a self sustaining piece of land, with honeybees, and vineyards, and orchards, and definitely acres of woods with mushrooms aplenty!
Of course! I didn't know mushrooms are part of it. But, of course it is! Mushrooms are a great substitute for any food! I'm really fascinated at how they communicate with each other. A thing of beauty!
I don't always eat mushrooms that I find in the wild, but when I do, I always make sure to look up what kind they are first on the internet. :)
Well, that definitely helps haha, though I also recommend buying some in depth books on the subject :)
Before or after eating them? :D
Always first... too many can/will kill you.
I'm fairly certain she jests ;)
