I traveled trough there before the wall came down. Drove through East Germany, Poland, The Czech and Slovak State(Czechoslovakia), Romania, Bulgaria, and what was then Yugoslavia. Several times. It was very fun! I am certain that it was instrumental in forming my beliefs.
It must have been a fascinating experience for an American... Do you have photos of your trip? I would love to see some of them ;) By the way, you have a very interesting blog so I am now following you.
