Bulgaria’s UFO: The Buzludzha Monument

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

Like most Eastern European countries, Bulgaria was part of the Communist Bloc for more than 3 decades until the late 80's. Today, 28 years later, the remnants of communism can be still seen everywhere. If I should name one communist thing that stands out, it would be the architecture with its massive concrete blocks, brutalist public buildings, and peculiar monuments. The most bizarre of all, however, is the Buzludzha Monument, which looks like a giant alien saucer that has landed on the top of the mountain.

It was built 35 years ago with the sole purpose of commemorating the establishment of the Bulgarian socialist movement, which later on led to the creation of the communist party. A mere 8 years after the construction was finished, the regime was taken down and the monument was abandoned. Since then, time has taken its toll on it.

The picture above shows the main entrance, which is decorated with graffiti. “Never forget your past” was painted on top of “Forget your past” in the midst of debates about whether such communist monuments should be destroyed or not. I think they are an important part of history and should stay to remind us of the people, ideologies, and events that defined the 20th century. Plus, they look super cool and are great to photograph.

When I think about it, it's actually surreal to see such monstrous brutalist construction in the middle of beautiful scenery. I will, therefore, encourage everyone that comes to Bulgaria to visit Buzludzha – it's an experience that will last a lifetime.

In a way I find it fascinating, particularly now with this morbid touch. I saw it on (German) TV last year, with 2 young men trying to get in and exploring it. I'd love to see it for real!

If you can get your hands on some cheap plane tickets, then it's worth coming here for a few days :) Are you into such type of architecture and abandoned places?

Actually I was planing to ride my motorcycle down there one day. I like everything unusual. Abandoned places for sure. I'm a surrealist painter after all 👽

Haha, right! A motorcycle tour to Bulgarian would be pretty damn awesome, and apart from Buzludzha, there are many other peculiar monuments and communist buildings :)

I'm sure of it and a friend told me, that the people are wonderful and welcoming... traffic's supposed to be a bit rough, particularly the trucks..

Well, Bulgarians are not known to be the best drivers in Europe unfortunately. So you'll have to be vigilant when riding your motorcycle here.

No idea if they are known for that, but with a motorcycle you always hope, the see you and don't run you over.. 🚜🚐 🚚 🏍🚛

Nice architecture there in Bulgaria !!

Yeah, do you like communist architecture? Most of Eastern Europe is full of it :)

Cool! I was in Bulgaria before they completed it, but saw the buildings in Sofia.

Wow @dawg-boy, what were you doing in Bulgaria? :)

I traveled trough there before the wall came down. Drove through East Germany, Poland, The Czech and Slovak State(Czechoslovakia), Romania, Bulgaria, and what was then Yugoslavia. Several times. It was very fun! I am certain that it was instrumental in forming my beliefs.

It must have been a fascinating experience for an American... Do you have photos of your trip? I would love to see some of them ;) By the way, you have a very interesting blog so I am now following you.

Some, well buried. I am digging through the vaults, so they will likely show up.

I had a friend from Bulgaria , his name was Nikola.

What happened to him?

i think he became a surgeon or something, he was a great bass player too. haha your post just made me remember all the cool stories he'd tell me of this beautiful country

Haha I'm glad I made you remember :))

Beautiful. I'm pretty sure that same structure was in an article in Climbing magazine last year(?) with an awesome female climber working routes both inside and outside of the building.

Thank you @sprerku :) It may well have been featured in the magazine. There are many people coming to explore this architectural wonder.

That looks really great @irreverent-dan. Upvoted and follow!

Thanks a lot @bart2305. I am following you too now :)
