Self Portrait Project

in #photography4 years ago (edited)

I'm just coming up to my 7 year anniversary of launching Betty Noir Studio. What started off as a humble home studio, has now become an all singing all dancing photography studio and I even have my own vintage salon and beauty parlour! Dreams really do come true!
I specialise in pinup, boudoir, vintage and alternative photography.

Over the years I have photographed myself several times, I find it a great way to learn more about posing and lighting, and a great way to try out new techniques and new bits of kit, without having to worry about the outcome. It's also the perfect way for me to get a quick promotional shot for a new offer that I want to release, without having to arrange a model and time that works for everyone.
But sometimes, I just do it to give myself a little boost. My days are spent helping build up self confidence for other ladies, and making them feel good and comfortable in their own skin, and I'm not going to lie, sometimes I just need that little confidence boost for myself too.
This particular series of self portrait images were just that. I'd hit a rough patch and needed picking back up!

I popped on my best "I've murdered my husband" robe, set my camera up on a tripod, remote trigger in hand and got to work.

I photographed these images in my bedroom. As you can probably tell, I'm a vintage loving lady through and through! I'd only just finished decorating this room, so it was only right that it was featured in these photos. The wallpaper was a ridiculous amount of money, considering it's essentially just a roll of paper. But when I saw it, I just had to have it! It's a William Morris paper, called Pimpernel. As it was pretty costly, I decided to put up a dado roll so I only had to invest in one roll...top money saving tip there!

I photographed in natural light, partly because the strobes are too cumbersome to lug around my bedroom, buts also because I feel natural light works best in this particular setting.
Now, the only issue with doing a photoshoot at home is pets! My beautiful kitty was sound asleep on the bed and I just didn't have the heart to move her, so she does kind of steal the show sometimes. This is not the first time her or the other one, have wandered into shot! I have many a spoilt image of a wandering cats bum in front of the lens!

WOW! I am so amazed and inspired by you @bettynoir. I am also a photographer enthusiast, still at 24 y/o. Though I am a civil engineer by profession, my heart fell for writing and photography since I was little. Hehe I hope to learn more and to expand my business, soon. :) And also, you are so pretty @bettynoir!

Oh thank you! @nikkabomb! Becoming a professional photographer was something I hadn't really planned. It was just a hobby for me as I never dreamt I'd be able to make a living from it, and then one day it just all seemed to come together all at once. It happened so quickly. I was at a difficult crossroads in my life and I decided to take a risk, and here I am! You just never know what's around the corner. Keep dreaming big 😊

That is incredibly inspiring miss @bettynoir. Thank you so much for sharing to me such information. When my time comes, I hope to share the same inspiration to the rest as well. Again, thank you so much.

Straight out of the forties, not that I was there to remember it!

Thank goodness! As much as I love the aesthetics, I don't think I would have wanted to live in that era.

Good to see some of the bigger boys appreciating your work, please keep posting... this is great.

Well it's thanks to people like you who are helping me get seen! Very much appreciated, thank you 😊

I always end up with hundreds of shots whenever I shoot self portraits. Framing myself is a nightmare :) This set is awesome and your use of natural light is so impressive.

Thank you 😊 Glad it's not just me! It takes a little while to get the framing right for sure! I see it as much need exercise! Running back and forth to adjust the camera angle 😂
