This is the most famous picture from Andreas Gursky and is titled "99 cents".
It is made of 2 shots stiched toegther digitally and then printed on a plexiglas board. It was taken in 2001 in a 99 cents store near Los Angeles.
It is particularly famous as it's the most expensive pic ever sold. It was sold for USD 3.3m in 2007 at Sotherby's!
5 more pictures we sold in the following years all for more than USD 2m.

This is the most famous landscape picture in the world and is the one Microsoft choose for the default desktop in Windows XP. Surprisingly this is a real place and the picture has not been modified nor edited.
It was shot by Charles O'Rear nel 1996 in Sonoma County, California.
The hill is now a vineyard but you can still go to visit it at these coordinates: Google Earth: 38.250124,-122.410817.

Walter Botts, is the real Uncle Sam. You can see him here where he imitates his poster in an image of 1970 from David Dreiner. Botts was the model for the famous poster, made by J. M. Flagg, with the iconic "I Want You" statement.
At the beginning Flagg used his own face as Uncle Sam, until he was asked to finalise it before WWII. He then decided to use Botts for this model of what we all recognise immediately as American. Botts was chosen as he had "longer arms, longer nose and bushier eyebrows".

Steve McCurry, one of he greatest photographers of all times, captured this pictures in 1991 during the Kuwait war.
Three camels are desperately looking for food and water and wonder among the oil fields still in flames.
Two more pictures that show the destruction to humans and nature that the war brought.

This is the most comprehensive picture released from the Hubble project in 2014, it's composed of multiple exposures taken from 2003 to 2012 by the Hubble telescope and is called Ultraviolet Coverage of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field.
In a patch of sky that up to the 90' was thought to have only 3 stars the telescope found over 10,000 galaxies...

In 1984, Whoopi Goldberg was already an established actress and the famous Annie Leibovitz was tasked to portrait her. Inspired by a theater piece she saw from Whoopi in which she was joking to use bleach to clarify her skin, she decided to use milk as a friend told her milk becomes opaque white in picture.
This well articulated and planned picture did not turn out as expected as Whoopi slipped while getting in the bathtub. Leibovitz was fast to capture the moment which resulted in one of her most famous pic.

Oleta Grimes, one of Elvis's teachers, liked Elvis’s musical talent and enrolled the 10y old Elvis in a radio talent contest on October the 3rd.
Elvis surprised everyone by climbing up on a chair while on stage to reach the microphone to sing “Old Shep” in front of several hundred people.
He only won fifth prize.
The next year in order to keep young Elvis away from his bicycle, on which he was constantly getting hurt, his mother bought him a guitar and the rest is history!
Before his great career in movies, Kubrick did a stint as a photographer. This is one of his most famous photo on the day of the Death of President Roosevelt.
