Steepshot: Anyone Can Build a Steem App like Steemit.com

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

This is Neechy and I'm excited to share this photo with you all not because it's especially exciting (though he is obviously adorable) but because I DIDN'T share it through Steemit.com!

Steemit.com Is Just the Beginning

I shared that photo using one of the first of the next wave of applications being developed by 3rd party developers (@busy and @zappl being two more) which leverage the Steem Protocol, just like Steemit.com does. Instead of a blogging platform the @steepshot team created a photo-sharing mobile application that's kind of like Instagram and which allows Steem users (which every Steemit.com and Busy.org user already is) to share their photos with the world! It's called Steepshot and so far it looks really good! You can download the app here.

If you want to learn more about Steepshot you can check out their post here: https://steemit.com/steemit/@steepshot/steepshot-ios-alpha-0-0-1

Steemit is an App: STEEM is a PLATFORM

Steepshot highlights an important point that many people new to Steemit.com probably don't realize which is that Steemit.com is just a user interface for a decentralized database protocol called the Steem Blockchain. When you create an account on Steemit.com, you're actually creating an account on a blockchain like Bitcoin or Ethereum, it's just a lot easier and far more user friendly.

Turn-key Monetization for Developers

Steemit.com is the user interface the Steemit Team created to show off this awesome technology, but anyone can build any kind of app they can think of to help Steem users upload, share, and monetize their content. When you build a Steem app you can tap into Steem's sign up process, data storage capabilities, and most importantly its ability to reward people for sharing their content while allowing the app developer to take a percentage of that revenue.

Great job so far @steepshot team! Keep up the great work!

Just wait until Steemit live streaming comes out in 2018.

Oops.

lol. looking forward to seeing all these third party apps roll out :)

good stuff, i know guys worked hard on that app!!! :)) cant wait to see you at steem fest!!

When and Where is steemfest?

Back at you!

This make me wonder what other kind of apps can be set up. The two big ones I could see is Yik-Yak and youtube. Recent changes in youtube policy means authors are getting less, so it would make since to set something up to replace it

Practically any kind of app can be built to take advantage of Steem's decentralized database, monetization mechanisms, sign in, and user base. Even existing applications like Medium.com, buzzfeed, Wired.com could integrate Steem to further monetize their content.

Very interesting, so if this applications were built on or intergate with steem would they be linked into to steeemit or have seperate content. Ex: take example buzzfeed, if they want to add could it be easy as add a link like those facebook and twitter ones?

Steemit is just a User Interface for the Steem blockchain. It shows the data that is stored in the blockchain. There are many ways other platforms could leverage steem, but essentially they have to post SOME form of content on the blockchain and get as many Steem users (they can have their existing users create Steem accounts) upvote that content as they can. How they go about doing that, and what content they host to the blockchain is up to them.

Cool, thanks for the great explaination. One follow up question. Do all interfaces access all stored data or are they seperate database on the same network?

The Steem Blockchain is itself a database and a full copy of it is stored on every witness's machine. The developer can choose to access whichever part of that database they choose and display it or not. I could, for example, create a note-taking application that encrypted my notes, stored them on the blockchain, and then when I signed into the application I would only see the notes I uploaded in their decrypted form. I would be seeing only my data and no one else would be able to see it except in an encrypted form.

Awesome. Thanks for taking the time to awsner my questions

Thank you for introducing us to the app, I will download it and use it for sure, Is STEEM taking over the world or what? I love this !!

Whenever the question about the Steem blockchain comes up, my description of Steem-vs-Steemit to people is something like this:

  • The Steem Blockchain is a Porsche 911 twin turbo engine.
  • The Steemit Website is the dented 1978 VW Beetle body they wrapped around that engine. Sure, it works, it'll get you there, but there's sooo many other options for bodies that could be used with that engine to really take advantage of the engine's capabilities.

That's an interesting way of putting it!

Great description of block chain! I mined for a while got pretty good understanding of the block chain. Nice to see this application and what it means. Really block chain is great because it's distributed and it goes beyond with the security and robustness of the network (anything I missed?). So for me it's easier to see in your clear description for sure. I can see this is way out of Facebook and all the other controlling networks! I get the sense that the currency is just the beginning and love how the currency is created with algorithm of it's characteristics. See my post on Moritorium and eclipse now for how our currency is hijacked and we are under negative economic inductance!

Following you and going to add you to my steemvoter rules!!!

Thanks again great post resteeming n it!

He is sooooo cute :) ... What is Steepshot btw...? And this could be a good source pic for a meme too :) (not turning this post into a contest ;))

Steepshot is an instagram competitor built on the Steem blockchain! You can check out their post here: https://steemit.com/steemit/@steepshot/steepshot-ios-alpha-0-0-1

And he says "thank you" for the kind words :)

Thanks, looks interesting. Will check it out, Haha ... if I pur pur pur, do I get an upvote to ;) (if yes, please consider my intro post hahaha
