LA River?
Being new to Los Angeles, I thought it sounded interesting to live next to the LA River. I will admit when I actually saw it my first thought was drainage ditch. A big cement canal with this little trickle of water flowing down a channel in the middle. Check out the picture below. I understand that California has been under drought conditions but calling that a river seemed more than a bit exaggerated.
I came to understand that the river caught run-off water. But the big surprise was the transformation during and after it rained. The little trickle turned into a torrent, totally filling the entire canal and rising high up the side walls. The water was murky greenish/brown rushing quickly to its ultimate destination, the ocean.
Los Angeles finally got some rain this week so I grabbed a quick photo of the river in the rain to share. What a difference a bit a rain makes.
Haven't gone down to the river in years. There used to be interesting characters living there, really old graffiti (from the 90's) and new, abandoned junk, and every now and then, stuff to watch out for like sharp objects and dirty needles.
