That Time I Enjoyed an Unforgettable Sunset at the End of the World

in #photofeed7 years ago

If you were to ask me what’s my favourite country in Europe, I would tell you that you’re asking the wrong question. I don’t do favourites: it takes me an eternity to decide which flavours of ice cream I want on my cone, I’m unable to choose between tea or coffee most of the time and I’m still unsure as to what I like best, summer or winter.

So I guess I would only be able to give an answer if I were to be asked what are the countries that I liked the most in Europe. And well, Portugal is one of them.

Winter had just begun when I went to Lisbon for a short family getaway. I had done a fair bit of research to plan an itinerary in order to make the most of our time there, because if there’s one thing we as a family don’t like doing is wasting our time sleeping or sitting around when visiting a new place.

Don’t get me wrong, I struggle and I curse my alarm every time I wake up really early in the morning, but it’s almost always worth it in the end. Key word: almost, because things don’t always go as planned.

Aside from walking around Lisbon and seeing all it had to offer, one of the places we found to be a must-see was Cabo da Roca — if you wanted to enjoy a top notch sunset, that’s exactly where you wanted to be to see the show. Easy to say I was hyped to go there and have a good time with my camera…and my parents too, of course.

So a couple of days later, after we had seen enough of the capital, we rented a car and we headed out to Cabo da Roca. If you want to take your time to walk around, wait for the sun to go down and maybe even wait a bit longer to see the night sky, then being the boss of your own time is the best way to do it: rent a car. You can thank me later, either with a virtual high five or with a million dollars. I’ll gladly accept either.

The sky was rather clear, the wind was gentle and the temperature was lovely. That’s the thing about Portugal: the weather is incredible in the winter as you get to enjoy the best of both worlds, winter and spring. It’s great. But then summers feel like hell on earth and all you wanna do is move to the North Pole and live in an igloo. So I’ll just stick to recommending a visit during any time of the year, except for summer… unless you’re one of those people that has icy water running in their veins and need boiling temperatures to be able to wear shorts and a t-shirt, and produce one or two drops of sweat.

We had 30 minutes to spare before golden hour began, and the viewpoint was crowded with tourists, some with cameras bigger than their heads, some with selfie sticks and some with such beautiful gear I teared up a little inside.

Cabo da Roca is the westermostpoint of continental Europe. There’s a lighthouse overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, standing by the edge of a wonderful rocky coastline that nothing short of impressive. The highest point is a 140m drop that can make even the bravest of us shiver, mostly due to the lack of barricades on the riskiest spots, even though people walk along them anyway, myself included. However, to be fair, if you want to stick to the path along the coast, you will end up walking on the edge, so if you’re afraid of heights, do stick to the one that takes you to the lighthouse instead. Your heart will thank you.

Just a couple of months prior to our visit a guy had died there. He had fallen off the cliff for trying to take a "next-level" selfie...

The sunset that evening was even more beautiful than I had imagined. The sky turned all shades of orange and pink, and it left me breathless at every sudden change of colour. Not gonna lie, I had a hard time trying to enjoy it with my own eyes and capturing it with my lens. It’s something I struggle with quite often during my travels. Yes, you want to live in the moment and take it all in, but you also want to steal that instant and make it your own to enjoy it for the rest of your days. It’s not easy giving priorities sometimes… right?

This last shot was taken by my mom. I told you my face doesn't feel particularly comfortable in front of a camera lol

Nevertheless, that sunset went down in my history as one of the most memorable ones that I ever witnessed.

I wish you the best of times if you ever decide to visit :)

Hey @voyagesofcarla2 what and awesome post! Your photos are all stunning! I love Portugal as we'll but I have not been to cabo da roca. Your pictures definitely make me want to add it to my bucket list!

It's funny you say how you feel torn between wanting to take photos and wanting to live in the moment when you travel. I have always felt the same way and it is such a tough balance! But I try to take a few pictures instead of going camera happy and try to also take a few minutes to take it all in. But it can be hard to do when you are surrounded by so much beauty that is begging to be photographed!
Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much @stay.wild ! I'm very happy to know you got something out of my post and are now planning on visiting that part of Portugal. The entire country is wonderful, but I left a little piece of my heart there.

That's exactly right! It's really difficult to focus on doing just one thing when you have so much beauty in front of your eyes. I guess what really matters at the end of the day is that you enjoy the moment and manage to get a few snaps to remind you of it in the future when you think back to it :)

Thanks again for commenting! And also, I love your username! :D

So true, I couldn't have worded it any better! :D

Thank you! I will be making a post explaining my username soon ;D

I agree with@staywild and yourself on the quandary of seeing something with your own eyes v watching through a camera lens - not that I am anything but a taker of holiday snapshots myself.
When you take pictures as beautiful as these though , you may lose a little of the original experience, but you’ll relive it every time you see them - and pass it on to everyone else who gets to see them.

Thank you, Lee! I appreciate that! That is also one of the things that I wish to do with my photos: show others how beautiful the world can be outside of our comfort zone and inspire them to go and wander to see everything with their own eyes. So the better I get at taking photos, the more likely they might be at impressing the onlooker and the more likely they might be to travel more :) Well, at least that's how I hope it works out in the end! haha

Beautiful set of photos!

I've never been to Portugal, but your post has inspired me to consider going back to Europe and visit. I've only heard great things about Portugal, so I think this is the motivation needed to make that trip possible.

The colours spilling through the pictures are amazing and the sheer scale of the cliffs gives me a bit of anxiety thinking about looking over the edge.

PS. I lol'd at the picture of the guy defying death and warning to ake that 'Perfect Selfie'.

Thank youuuuuu!

You must go! Portugal has nothing but beautiful landscapes and good food to offer. And don't forget to rent a car to go around and do as you please. Nothing better than having the freedom of deciding where to go and for how long to stay.

I saw people walking all the way down to the scariest edge of those cliffs and I got heart palpitations by just looking at them. The last thing I wanted to see was someone falling down... O_O

Ugh, I know, right? That's how the other guy died! The things people do to get the "perfect selfie"... sigh.

Such beautiful images! I´m doing a trip to Portugal in just a few weeks and would love to witness beauty such as this! Also I laughed at your intro cause I truly felt like it was an introduction for me! so indecisive! Keep making beautiful posts like this one!

Aaah thank you, fellow indecisive human! :) It's not easy to pick favourites when there are so many wonderful things out there, am I right? We're the type that are fine with having a little bit of everything... just like ice cream! :D

Thanks for the comment and I wish you the best of time in Portugal! Highly recommend you visit this place. I hope to see your post on Steemit about it soon enough ;)

You for sure will! Keep a close eye next week to see how it all went down for me

Amazing photos. To me, the real golden hour is that time just before the sky turns color when the sun is low and makes long shadows. You showed this favorite time of mine.

The photo with all the people silhouetted in front of the sunset is stunning.

You guys got a little close to the edge for my liking any how :)

Thank you so much! I'm very happy to know I managed to give justice to your favourite time of the day.

We did get rather close to the edge, and let me tell you, my heart was not having the best of time seeing my parents walk in front of me. I was more worried about them than anything else, ha! Isn't that always the case though? You're confident in your own steps, but you're terrified your loved ones might make a mistake... is that just me? Either way, we survived :)

No, it's not just you. I'm the same way. I get really nervous about things like that.

One time, I almost went over the edge. Not really almost, but had my son not quietly warned me I would have because I was focused on getting a shot. Had he shouted it would have startled me....but he was quiet and just said, watch it there mom. I have nightmares about it.

Ugh. Glad everyone is safe :)

Oh wow, that's scary! No wonder you have still have nightmares about it! Thankfully your son was smart about it and managed to get you out of danger in a safe way.

It's very easy to get distracted sometimes, especially when you're trying to take that shot you composed in your head. We should have sensors that could tell us how close we're getting to stepping onto something dangerous, just like the ones cars have. It'd be oh so very useful!

lol....that would be something my husband would want...he likes sensors on the doors, windows, the car, his keys etc. We have more beeps and sounds that an alarm company! Can you imagine shoe sensors? I'll have to tell him....he'll think it's a great idea :)

Hahaha then he would definitely love the idea of having one more type of beeping sound around the house! Do let me know if he decides to build one himself lol

I'll take a picture of it !

Beautiful landscapes friend! Look at my post and tell me what you think about the sunset that I captured on the beach. Regards!

Thank you!

Nice sunset shot, Jose! :)

Really great pictures! Almost unreal... I remember seeing an amazing sunset on Capri, Italy once. It is definitely impossible to do favorites... Thanks for your story!

Maybe you want to try the #LoveTheClouds contest as well!

Thank you @tobetada! Appreciate the comment :)

Never been to Capri, but I heard it's beautiful over there. Favourites are not as easy to pick as they let us believe, are they?

Thanks! I'll definitely check it out. Gotta love a good challenge!

hi @voyagesofcarla2 ! Your pictures are awesome! Especially the last ones where it gets darker.
I also agree with your text that you can´t decide which country is your favorite because every country has its cons and pros!
Have a nice day

Very nice view and nice pic click
Also too good your side set ...

Thank you! Appreciate the comment :)

Thank you @simplyyuma! :) Indeed, every country has something good to offer as well as something bad to bring you disappointment, hence why I think it's always best to keep an open mind and take things as they come :)

Great post!! The first picture is incredible ;)

Thank you! :) That's my favourite picture from that day. I'm glad you like it!
