KAOHSIUNG - Unknown, Underrated, Unexpectedly Cool [EN/DE]

Hey guys! I hope you had a good start into the new week! Today I would like to tell you about a place that probably only very few of you even know. It's Taiwan's second largest city, which with its three million inhabitants can definitely be called a metropolis. I showed some photos to my Instagram followers and let them guess which city it was. Nobody recognized Kaohsiung, which again shows how unknown and underestimated this city still is. Therefore I am even more happy to introduce to you the first stop of my journey through Taiwan now!

Hey Leute, ich hoffe ihr seid gut in die neue Woche gestartet! Heute möchte ich von einem Ort erzählen, den wohl nur sehr wenige von euch überhaupt kennen. Es handelt sich um Taiwans zweitgrößte Stadt, die man mit ihren drei Millionen Einwohnern durchaus als Metropole bezeichnen kann. Ich zeigte meinen Instagram-Followern einige Fotos und ließ sie raten, um welche Stadt es sich wohl dabei handle. Niemand erkannte Kaohsiung, was wiederum zeigt, wie unbekannt und unterschätzt diese Stadt noch ist. Umso mehr freut es mich, euch nun den ersten Stopp meiner Reise durch Taiwan vorstellen zu dürfen!

In fact, I could almost count the western tourists I met within a week on one hand. Kaohsiung has a lot of sights, a tropical climate, clean beaches and of course lots of great photo spots to offer. I would like to show you some of my impressions by presenting my best photos to you in this article.

Tatsächlich konnte ich die westlichen Touristen, die mir innerhalb einer Woche begegneten, fast an einer Hand abzählen. Dabei hat Kaohsiung eine Unzahl an Sehenswürdigkeiten, ein tropisches Klima, saubere Strände und natürlich jede Menge tolle Fotospots zu bieten. Ich möchte euch hier ein paar meiner Eindrücke zeigen, indem ich euch meine besten Aufnahmen in diesem Artikel präsentiere.

I particularly liked the art district at the harbour, which would have deserved its own article due to its large number of unusual works of art. From there you also have a great view of the skyline with the impressive "Tuntex Sky Tower". It is Taiwan's second tallest building, designed by the same architect as the famous "Taipei 101". At 378 meters, it ranks 23rd in the world in terms of height.

Besonders gut gefiel mir das Künstlerviertel am Hafen, das durch seine Vielzahl an ausgefallenen Kunstwerken schon einen eigenen Beitrag verdient hätte. Dort hat man auch eine tolle Aussicht auf die Skyline mit dem markanten „Tuntex Sky Tower“. Es handelt sich dabei um Taiwans zweithöchstes Gebäude, das vom selben Architekten entworfen wurde, wie der berühmte „Taipei 101“. Mit 378m liegt es auf Platz 23 weltweit, was die Höhe betrifft.

Even Kaohsiung's subway stations leave no doubt that you are in Taiwan's capital for art and design. The unique "Dome of Light" at "Formosa Boulevard" station is composed of 4,500 pieces of colored glass and covers an area of 660 square meters.

Selbst Kaohsiungs U-Bahn-Stationen lassen keinen Zweifel daran, dass man sich in Taiwans Hauptstadt für Kunst und Design befindet. Der einzigartige „Dome of Light“ in der Station „Formosa Boulevard“ wurde aus 4.500 farbigen Glasstücken zusammengesetzt und hat eine Fläche von 660 Quadratmetern.

A short bus ride from the city centre is one of the most important sights of the country located: the "Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum". This gigantic temple complex is one of the most impressive religious places I have ever visited. In spite of the many tourists, there are still smaller buildings that are almost empty. I took advantage of this by photographing a few long corridors through my crystal ball.

Eine kurze Busfahrt vom Stadtzentrum entfernt befindet sich eine der wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten des gesamten Landes: das „Fo-Guang-Shan-Buddha-Museum“. Dieser gigantische Tempel-Komplex zählt zu den eindrucksvollsten religiösen Orten, die ich je besucht habe. Trotz der vielen Touristen gibt es hier auch kleinere Gebäude, die so gut wie menschenleer sind. Dies nutzte ich, um ein paar lange Gänge durch meine Glaskugel zu fotografieren.

Other important attractions are the tiger and dragon pagodas at Lotus Lake or "Cijin Island", which can be reached by a 10-minute ferry ride. The bicycle and pedestrian bridge "Cianjhen Star" with its unusual steel construction also offers a great spot for photography.

Weitere wichtige Attraktionen sind die Tiger- und Drachen-Pagoden am Lotussee oder die vorgelagerte Strandinsel „Cijin Island“, die man durch eine 10-minütige Fahrt mit der Fähre erreichen kann. Einen tollen Fotospot bietet auch die Fahrrad- und Fußgängerbrücke „Cianjhen Star“ mit ihrer ausgefallenen Stahlkonstruktion.

I really enjoyed staying in Kaohsiung and hope that this city will soon be discovered by more international tourists. It can be reached from the capital Taipei by a 90-minute train ride. If you ever come to Taiwan, don't miss this fantastic metropolis, a visit is definitely worth it!

Ich kann wirklich nur schwärmen von Kaohsiung und hoffe, dass diese Stadt auch bald von mehr internationalen Touristen entdeckt wird. Immerhin ist sie durch eine nur 90-minütige Fahrt mit dem Schnellzug von der Hauptstadt Taipei erreichbar. Wenn ihr mal nach Taiwan kommt, dann lasst euch diese traumhafte Metropole auf keinen Fall entgehen, ein Besuch lohnt sich definitiv!
