Great post and definitely on my bucket list...ok maybe not next year because I have 2 small kids and driving 500 miles will be a nightmare, but some years from now absolutely !!

Yes, some trips are simply less 'fun' with children! This might be one of them since there are not too many places on the road for a quick stop / drink / toilet :-) But once they're a bit bigger: definitely go!

In the US, we determine if a place is offering a "home cooked meal" by the number of calendars. Three or more is best. This sounds like the kind or route with lots of calendars and lots of beauty. Thanks for sharing.

Don't miss the Isle of Skye though - arguably the most beautiful area of Scotland! It is in my eyes, and I have seen almost it all!
Thanks for that tour around my native homeland! You described all the situations well, and took some great shots! I go back every year, and have traveled on those one track roads many many times. We took the route you did 24 years ago now. Usually we just head to the west and north west coast and islands now.
If you look on the map, you will see the city of Elgin. My hometown is Buckie, and it is on the coast about 16 miles from there!
We will be in Scotland in August this year. My cousin's daughter is getting married in a castle, and we are going to attend the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, so I will have lots to write about! :-)
Oh wow, you lived there?! That's amazing! After the NC-500 we went more to the east, the closest we've come to your hometown is Dufftown, we'll have to come back to explore a bit more :-) I just LOVE Scotland and I can imagine you miss your native homeland from time to time.

Yes, I grew up in Scotland, and I do miss it although I have been away for 44 years now. My Dad and my sisters and brother are still there. I know Dufftown well!
I live in Florida now, but go home every year! :-)
I feel especially the people are really really friendly and loving. 'Home' can have different meanings though, Florida might be home now, but the feeling you might have in Scotland... Well, only you will know :-) Glad you are able to travel home every year! That's a great privilege - enjoy your August visit!
I go home to Scotland, then I come home to Florida. Yes, they are both home!

Wow, I love these scenic drives. I did drive across the US, from Detroit to LA, but my favorite road to drive on is M22 in Michigan.
Granted, I live here so I am biased, but it is quite beautiful in northern Michigan. Lake Michigan, Glen Lake, Torch Lake, the Sleeping Bear sand dunes and national lakeshore...to much to list.
If I ever make it to your neck of the woods I will surly try this scenic drive, and if you ever visit Michigan, please drive along M22.

Yay, I get free tips! Thanks! I certainly will come 'your way' someday and I will definitely drive at least this route. My takeaway from all my travels, always, is: listen to the locals. If they still recommend a route themselves it must be worth it :-)

Haha, yes, you should! You will suddenly understand why people often refer to sheep as 'stupid' :')
Why do they just run like that over the road in front of cars? We have the same problem in South Africa we have cattle that just jumps in front of cars at certain places.
They are well trained sheep. LOL! In all my years, I have not yet seen a dead sheep hit by a car, but no doubt there may have been a few! They graze on the mountains in that part of the country, so there is no way to fence them in. :-)
Seems like they are more trained than here in SA. Here the graze next to the road and only next to the road hahah
Because they roam freely on the mountains, each farmer puts a different colored dye on his sheep, so that he will know his own! These all belong to the same farmer. :-)
ooh Okay that makes sense, I guess with all that roaming a farmer might loose a few sheep if they not tagged.

I am a sucker for any place that is green and wet (those Pacific Northwest roots showing). This looks like a dream come true, complete with counting sheep lol.
