I was never formally trained in photography, but one of the first “rules" that I learned about was not to shoot into the sun. I have heard this from many people for many reasons. Some say the shot will never turn out while others will claim that your camera will break. Those people might be right for various reasons, but in my experience the shots often look epic and I have yet to notice any camera damage from taking sun shots.

I took these right before sunset from the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve near Redwood City, California.

Great images :-)
As far as I've been told, it's more of an issue when aiming the camera towards the sun for a longer period of time (even more with telephoto lenses) - and it is also important to protect your eyes, i.e. don't use the optical viewfinder.
I usually try to avoid exposing the sensor for too long, and never had any issues as well. But I remember seeing burnt aperture blades and sensors when people tried to capture the solar eclipse.

I get the impression that your going to over expose and blowout your photo well before you damage the lens.

Sometimes the flares really add something to the total picture, so I don't mind ;D

I like to look on them as guidelines not rules as sometimes you may go against them and still get a pretty awesome shot or two as this post shows

Can only echo @tattoodjay with a little of @christianunger's wisdom. Knowing the reasons for the rules you can determine where the leeway to bend them a little is. Beautiful images ~ Love the light energy circles @fivealive55. 🦋

nice pic! My friend If you like the photography you can see my profile too. i wish the best shoots!
