As far as I've been told, it's more of an issue when aiming the camera towards the sun for a longer period of time (even more with telephoto lenses) - and it is also important to protect your eyes, i.e. don't use the optical viewfinder.
I usually try to avoid exposing the sensor for too long, and never had any issues as well. But I remember seeing burnt aperture blades and sensors when people tried to capture the solar eclipse.
I get the impression that your going to over expose and blowout your photo well before you damage the lens.
