夜に街を歩くのが好きです

それも、新宿や渋谷のような都会ではなく、バブルで賑わったような、地方の静かな夜の街が好きです。お酒が飲みたいわけでも、スナックの若いお姉さんに興味があるわけでもありません。無愛想なネオンや点いては消える街灯、大人の仮面を捨てる呑んべえに気怠そうなバーのマスター。そういった夜の街を見ているのが好きなのです。

I like the city at night

I like the city at night. I like the provincial town which was once busy. I do not want to drink alcohol. I do not want to talk to young ladies. I like neon light and dimly lit street lights. I like watching the city at night.

バブルとネオン街

１９８０年代後半から９０年代はじめに、日本は空前の好景気にわきます。不動産は軒並み高騰し東京２３区の土地を全て売ればアメリカの土地を全て買うことができると言われました。「財テク」の儲けが本業を上回る企業が登場します。一万円札をねじ込んでタクシーを止める人があちこちにいました。行くだけでお金が貰える就職の面接会が開かれました。振り返ると異常な時代だったと言えます。

のちの、この熱狂はバブルと呼ばれるようになります。

バブルは地方にも活気をもたらします。小さな都市でさえ飲み屋が立ち並び、仕事帰りの人々を癒しました。ところが、バブルが終わりとともに日本経済の力は逆回転を始めます。そして飲み屋にも次第にお金が回らなくなってきます。

バブルの時代には多くの建物がつくられました。私が好きなのは、バブル期につくられ現在形をとどめているバブルの遺構。バブル時代の建造物にはどことなくキラキラしていることが多いです。ネオン街は、その一例です。（もちろんバブル後に建造された建物や改修された物件もたくさんあるはずです。）

Bubble Economy and Neon Street

From the latter half of the 1980s to the beginning of the 1990s, Japan has its unprecedented booming economy. It was said that if you sell all the land in Tokyo 23 wards, you can buy all of the land in the USA. Companies whose profits of "financial tech" outweigh the main business appear. There were people who stopped taxis by screwing 10,000 yen bills here and there. An interview meeting for employment that gave me money just by going was held. Looking back, it can be said that it was an abnormal era.Later, this enthusiasm will be called a bubble.

The bubble brings vibrancy to rural areas as well. Even in small cities, drinkers stood in line and healed people on their way home from work. However, as the bubble ends, the power of the Japanese economy starts to reverse. And the money does not gradually turn around to the bar.In the age of the bubble money was blowing, so many buildings were made. What I like is the remains of the bubble created in the bubble period and keeping its present form. The buildings of the bubble era are somewhat glittering in many cases. Neon Street is one such example. Of course, there should be many buildings and renovated buildings built after the bubble.

わびさびと酒田

日本の美的表現に「わびさび」があります。

わびさびを説明するのは難しい（というか理解が及んでいない）のですが、一般に茶の湯や苔、神社仏閣などの質素で静かなものを指すと思われます。地方のネオン街は雑多ではあるのですが、わびさびに通ずるものを感じます。静謐な空間から在りし日の残り香を目で感じ愛でるのです。

さびは表面的な美しさについての言葉です。物は、割れたり、汚れたり、欠けたりします。このような変化を「多様で独特な美しさ」とするのがさびです。

一方で、わびは心の有り様についての言葉です。一般的には月日を経た変化は「劣化」とみなされます。「劣化」という言葉にはネガティブな意味があります。しかし、「変化とは多様で独特な美しさを帯びることである」と、ポジティブに捉える心情をわびと言います。

この記事でつかっている写真は、主に、私が山形県酒田市で撮影したものです。酒田は山形県北部に位置する港町です。

酒田は中世から港湾都市として知られていたようです。河村瑞賢が東回り航路・西回り航路を開拓すると、酒田の町は物流の拠点として一層栄え、江戸時代には酒田が日本の物流の拠点となっていました。西廻り航路を走る船を北前船（きたまえぶね）と呼びます。酒田には幕府が直接治める天領がたくさんあり天領で採れた江戸幕府の天領米（てんりょうまい）を運び出す航路が必要とされました。酒田が北前船のスタート地点となったのはこういう理由があるのです。

港湾も健在です。しかし繁栄を謳歌した酒田も今は昔。現在は穏やかな地方都市のひとつとなっています。繁華街も残っていますが、おそらく物流の中心だった頃の面影はないでしょう。どの都市でも言えることですが、もちろんバブルの活気も残っていません。

このような変化は「衰退」として一般に悪く捉えられます。「あの頃はよかったなあ。」と懐かしむ心情も素敵ですが「衰退」を「美」とするのがわびさびです。地方都市のネオン街が美しいのは色とりどりの光線が眩しいからだけではありません。変化を多様で独特な美しさと捉える、わびさび故だと思っています。

Wabisabi and Sakata

There is "Wabisabi" in the aesthetic expression of Japan.It is difficult to explain Wabisabi in English. In general, we will cover tea ceremony, moss, shrines and temples. However, the local Neon Street is miscellaneous, but I feel something that leads to Wabisabi. From the tranquil space I feel and love the scent of the day I live."Sabi" is a word about superficial beauty. Things break, dirty, or chipped. Rust is to make such change "diverse and unique beauty".On the other hand, "Wabi" is a word about the existence of the mind. In general, changes over time are considered "degraded". There is a negative meaning in the word "deterioration", but I will say a wish to grasp this positively.

The picture used in this article was mainly taken by me in Sakata City, Yamagata prefecture. Sakata is a port town located in the northern part of Yamagata Prefecture.Sakata seems to have been known as a port city from the Middle Ages. When the route is developed, the town of Sakata further flourishes as a logistics base. Sakata was the base of logistics in Japan during the Edo period. In Sakata there are many areas where the shogunate can directly rule, and a route to bring out the rice harvested there was needed. It is from such circumstances that a route was opened in Sakata.

The harbor is still alive today. But Sakata who enjoyed prosperity is a long time ago. It is now one of the calm regional cities. Downtown is also left, but there is no image of the time when it was the center of logistics. Even in any city, the bubble's vibrancy is not left.Such changes are generally regarded as bad as "decline". It is wonderful to have a nostalgic feeling "You were good in those days." At the same time, "Wabisabi" finds beauty in "decline". Neon streets in local cities are beautiful not only because their colorful rays are dazzling. I am also thinking that "Wabisabi" is the reason why a calm Neon town is beautiful.
