Street photography around NYC; Manhattan and Brooklyn

in #photo7 years ago

Greenwich Village, Manhattan.

I took this particular photo at a corner where several streets converge in an awkward fashion. NYC is mostly a square cornered grid of streets. But being an older city (by US standards) there are many aberrations to the squareness. Perhaps because before Manhattan was one big city, it was an assortment of villages, with green space, farms and trees in between. Though not all of the buildings date back to that era, the streets do. So you get a pinched little corner, with angular buildings.

I was not high when I took this photo.

But I get the impression that many people in the DUMBO (down under the Manhattan bridge Overpass) neighborhood are certainly high. This is the High st/Brooklyn bridge subway station.

On the A train.

In the 21st century it is difficult for a street photographer to capture candid shots of regular people doing their thing. 90% of the time when a person finds themselves with idle time, they imediately go to their smartphone and start jabbing at their social media, game or emails. So it is nearly impossible to get a timeless composition with someone gazing off into the distance. Smoking a cigarette, combing their hair or whatever.
You all look asleep zoned out on your phones.
