There Are No Communities; Only Individuals - Exploring the Internet Generalization from Entertainment and Beyond

in #philosophy6 years ago

I've been asked to do little more personal posts on steemit. But I don't really have many nice things to say about Vlogs and similar content. They are low quality and diluted content with padded length and not a whole lot of substance. So I'll just post a more summarized version with some good substance from the stuff happened through my day.

The Community/ The Internet/ The Fans/ The Audience

There is a lot of talk about these things especially when it comes to online forums, articles and discussions. But what is this "People" that has allegedly spoken for or against a whole bunch of things? Collectives do not exist. Labels and generalizations exist and you can assign those labels on individuals or individuals can join around those labels. Today I came across two occasions that are very relevant to this topic/discussion. Here is the second one:

It's from a guy named Lucas Raycevick who is just a video game journalist (a really good one who keep the discussion to games without getting into non-issues) and from what I know he's not some free market individualist or anything. He's just a guy who talk about games who knows what he is talking about. I agree with everything in the video and the comment section gives me hope regarding the future of humanity.

This needed to be said. I'm seriously not a fan of articles which refer to "the internet" as some collective being. The fact is that writing of that nature is a lazy 'out', so that discussion surrounding the nuances of a community and conflicting views can be entirely avoided. A lot of my writing these days refers to how a game's community reacts to certain changes, and I make an effort to specify 'some gamers' or 'many people', as opposed to a collective. It's an easy thing to forget, but I think recognising this distinction between individual and community, whilst still identifying the predominant views of each, is the best approach for promoting discussion.

I like COD for Zombies and Campaign. It was a key pillar that kept me coming back.
I love Halo for their characters, run and gun gameplay, and cinematic military Music. These partially were fulfilled by Halo Wars 2. Now we'll get Halo Infinity.
I don't play too much multiplayer. I am different. I am a single voice wishing to be heard.
Thank you for acknowledging this.

Before I came across this very sensible video I came across a forum thread that was mostly vocal about how everything is ruined and how they were betrayed and how the game Cyberpunk 2077 (of which they haven't even seen proper gameplay footage of) is being terrible for the reason that the game is on First Person instead of Third Person despite being from a studio that was making great Third Person games. You can checkout the madness at your own risk: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=236603&page=1 Just don't indulge in it. It is a waste of time.

Social Experiment: Does This Person Look Like a Gamer?

That was a very serious question. Does the person in the above picture look like a gamer?

Well, it's a question that takes apart the entire point of the question. Henry Cavill was playing World of Warcraft so hard that he missed the first call from Zack Snyder. If that's not a gamer I don't know what is (excluding the irresponsible game addicts)

If That's not Enough, Here Are 2 More Gamers

Talking about any collective or collective voice/ opinion can be very misleading. Collectives are at best a generalization like "Gamers", "Democrats", "Republicans", "Conspiracy Theorists", "Vegans", "Muslims", "Africans", "Christians" etc. But at many times it actually become a way to distort truth. Take the Nazis for an example. The word gets thrown around so much but the Hitler and his army didn't even call themselves Nazis with the exception of few very rare and early occasions.

Hitler's party was the National Socialist party. Nazis called themselves National Socialists.

Now imagine your random poor soul being called a National Socialist for generic nonsensical reason XYZ, instead of being called a Nazi. Better yet imagine an alt-right MGTOW person being called a National Socialist. It kind of gets you thinking...... right?

It's the same case calling Ronda Rousey a good for nothing weak bitch living in a basement or calling Mega Fox a pimple ridden fat slob. None of these make any sense. These nonsensical parts are the parts where the illusion and distraction of collectives start to crack. It's in minority cases like this we realize the lies. Not all those who get vaccinated face grave consequences. It's a minority. Not all those who go to a movie ask for a deep and complex narrate. It's a minority. It's also a minority who become inventors and enterprises. It is a minority that do good investments with their money and we who have joined (technically) censorship free STEEM and other cryptocurrencies are a minority.

But the term "minority" itself is just a label. There is a minority of people on steemit that are against free markets and some even want to abolish money. Also there is a minority of people who'd love to be serial killers. There is also a minority of people who want to go back to middle ages and there is a minority of Neo-Nazis (who are actually using he term "Nazi" this time)

It's All About Context and Context is Paramount

Even Decentralization isn't all good

On a more serious note, think about the decentralized tyranny of political correctness and other destructive feel good agendas. Even Reddit has gone to new lows shadow banning steemit.com links until mods manually approve them and It's likely that steemit.com isn't the only one in this shadow ban list. My soucre is here: https://steemit.com/steemit/@fubar-bdhr/reddit-censoring-all-steemit-links

Don't be Influenced By Masses - Always Judge Things on Their own Right in Accordance With The Context

Don't let your voice get disappeared. When The Empire Strikes Back it was't received well critically or commercial compared to the rest. But now it is regarded as the best. Masses don't exist. Masses don't have integrity and they don't even see that far ahead. Stick with what you believe in. Even Superman got bullied and he was called Fat Cavill.
