It's a pretty complex- and sadly common- issue I deal with quite a lot in my coaching and counseling practice.

Most of the time, I've found the behavior can be tracked back to hyper-critical or hyper-supportive parents. One sets up a latent anger at having anything or anyone try to control your life, but without any tools to express feelings in a healthy manner (because it was probably unsafe, in childhood). The other sets up a sense of entitlement that leads to someone becoming sullen and "difficult" when they don't get their way, because they were taught to expect to always get their way.
