Final Incarnation (DIY Flying Machine)

in #paragliding9 years ago (edited)

Please check out my Hi, I'm the EggMeister and I too have been 'brought to a rolling boil' post first in order to get an insight to this current post if you are new to my channel.

This is the final chapter in the gx200 powered paramotor story and yet in terms of performance, the most viable too. The previous direct-drive Eggmotor was sadly stripped down as I required the engine and harness for the Bailey-Egg inspired creation.

I made a basic tube roller out of scrap steel and some orange nylon rollers so I could roll my own stainless steel cage tubing for the newest machine. It saved me outsourcing the job at a greater cost.

My father-in-law Sam and I went out to a quiet field and ground tested the prototype, it certainly felt like it had the necessary power. Here is Sam having a 'play'.

We had tested the thrust with the trusty old bathroom scales and we were getting 49kg thrust at full throttle which was approximately 10kg more than the old direct drive version.

Well, there was nothing more to it really, apart from final tweaks (such as removing the test fuel tank and installing a proper one) that were carried out at a later date, I eventually worked up enough courage to get this big brute into the air.

Apart from those final tweaks (which were documented at the time on YouTube(https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqipT49KcuKxJ_0tdvCPdfg) and the Wordpress blog(https://eggmotor.wordpress.com/) this Eggmotor would never be flown by me again.

After 4 years of constant but evolving development, I was losing interest now and my lower back was give me some problems too. I will later post about some spin-off projects with larger engines but in terms of powered flight, I wouldn't be engaging in ever again :( I sold this Bailey-Egg inspired machine to a novice pilot known as 'Mushroom Paul' in 2013. I heard about a couple of flights he did with it but all has gone quiet now so I don't know if this Egg still flies.

I hope those following have found the Eggmotor story of some interest. Please feel free to ask any questions regarding the project and I'll see if my brain can still recall the data :)

As always,

TTFN,
Rob.

I don't know how I missed this? Great post!

Much appreciated Captain :) I think over the years I spent 99.5% developing, building, ground testing, tweaking, more ground testing, blogging about it all and the remainder 0.5% actually in the air lol.

What wing do you fly? I want to get into the sport

Hi Kyle, I fly an old Nova Artax. It's currently at 'The Loft' for a full service as it hasn't had one in a few years. I'm hoping they report it as OK to fly otherwise it might get expensive. When I was building and flying the 'Eggmotors', I used a blue & white Windtech Kinetic glider as it had trimmers for motor flying as well as speed bar for soaring flight.

It's an amazing sport, you'll always view the skies & clouds differently once you've been up there :)

Hopefully my investments payoff enough so I can make the plunge!
