Making Coconut Oil Today - Great pictures of how Coconuts turn into Trees - Life is Good :-)
🎄While opening coconuts today several were just at the sprouting stage. If they get to the leaf stage the whole middle of the coconut fills with a cotton candy like material. These ones just had a button starting inside.
To the right you can see the buttons that form and eventually fill the whole nut.➽
If you have never opened a coconut it's not an easy thing to do. While growing on the tree they come in a very hard to remove fiberous husk.
Here are couple with the machete I open them with.🔻🔻🔻
Even with a very sharp machete it takes a couple of minutes to get the nut out of the shell.
There are a viriaty of ways to do this but I usually cut from the middle upward and downward on the shell because the fiber runs from top to bottom.
And if I happen to cut to deep and hit the coconut it tends to just glance of and not break it.
I've seen some people with a very sharp machete actually cut through the inner shell right to fruit level. Then the coconut can just be graded on a regular grader.
I'm not so fancy and after the shell has been cracked in half using the back side of a machete and the coconut water ran through a coffee filter we use a metal scraper with a bunch of V's carved in the end to grind the fruit out.
It takes a lot of pressure to scrape the fruit out so the metal is nailed to a flat board and it is sat on so you can use both hands.
You start at the back and roll the coconut down to scrape untill you get to the inner shell.
The pinkish part will come out where the stem was and grow leaves and the other part will come through about mid way and become the root system.
All the nutrients the coconut tree needs to grow the stock and root system is in the coconut water and fruit so its no wonder drinking the fresh coconut water and eating the fruit is so good for you.
🌊 When I'm camping on the beach and have no coffee, drinking the coconut water and eating some fruit gives me the same kind of wakeup feeling.🍵
Most sandy coast lines will have coconut trees because the coconuts float and wait till they get tossed by a wave up on the beach then start the growth process. And coconuts can grow in salt water & sand.
When the coconut feels its time to grow will choose the correct 1 of 3 eyes on the nut to start the process based on what position it stops moving.
Coconut trees also have a very extesive root system that grows out and down in all directions giving it a firm anchor in the ground or sand. So trying to dig out even a tiny coconut tree is quite hard and labour intensive plus many roots will have to be cut.
We have 2 large bowls full of graded coconut but Johana is not going to do it today, and is complaining I havn't finished cutting the grass LOL. So I'll do a follow up blog probably tomorrow on how we turn the fruit into oil.
Thanks for reading & supporting my blog, I cherish comments 📫 👀
Coconuts are great! There are hard to open too. The water and meat is very healthy. Sometimes we make coconut kefir from the water. I actually just published a podcast episode on superfoods and coconuts is on the list. You can find it here: https://steemit.com/health/@arevolution/ep-6-or-superfoods-the-most-nutrient-dense-foods-on-the-planet
That's for sure, I saw a Hawaiian once open a coconut with just a sharp stick buried in the dirt ( Impressive ) took like 10 seconds. Have you ate the center after the plant starts to grow? Sweet fluffy candy :-)
Cheers
Just wondering how different these coconuts are from other places.
Is the water sweet?
That is a good question, I'm sure there are different varieties of coconuts but never looked into it. Might be worthy of a blog :-)
Cheers
I did not think either; suddenly came to me while posting on your blog.
I will wait for your blog instead of Googling. :)
Cheers
Thanks for sharing...
Thanks for sharing, I have never tried to open a coconut before as they do not grow near us, but have always wondered how they sprouted.
Great post!
It'll be really interesting to see how you turn the coconut meat into oil! We use a lot of coconut oil around here, especially when my wife is not eating dairy while nursing our new babies. It's rare to find the whole nut at the stores, however, or at least find it in any form except as an expensive specialty item.
Amazing!!! Thank you so much for sharing Cody💗

Use a lot of coconut oil, amazing stuff. If only I could grow then in my garden :)
