BOID Season 2: It's not too late to join!
The second season of the Boid competition started yesterday on the 21st of July. This is actually the third season of mining, but season 0 was more of a test run.
Season 1 saw more users and teams come forward wanting to contribute their unused system resource to mapping cancer markers and mining the BOID token. As I mentioned in my other post, I have staked over 4 million tokens to help me generate more rewards this season. Even though the second season has started, it isn't too late to begin your Boid journey.
The only options that are not available to you during the season are staking. Since you are just getting started, you wouldn't have any Boid to stake anyway, so no big deal.
You can get started with Boid by using my referal link. Simply follow the link and download and install the desktop software. They also have a Linux client you can run via command line.
My referral link will make you part of the @eos.detroit team. They are a quickly growing and gaining votes on the EOS network to become a paid block producer. They have a lot of exciting things in the works.
If you would rather join a team that has some local significance, you can always change teams after you get started mining. Boid has some "penalties" in place to discourage wonton team jumping so you will want to make sure you are moving where you really want to be for that initial jump.
I have a pretty beefy i7 processor in my desktop machine, I run Boid at 85% processing power and I generally notice zero impact on my daily performance. I have the software running on a handful of machines and I have been able to achieve a decent position on the global leader-board.
At the end of the season and throughout the season, Boid gives rewards to top performing teams and individual users. Additionally, many teams offer their own rewards to their top performer's throughout the season. By simply letting your computer process work units you can earn the BOID token and more.
The current project that the teams are working on is Mapping Cancer Markers. There are a variety of other projects that Boid could potentially contribute to in the future. According to this interview with the founder of Boid, the users in the project contribute over 3 years worth of computing power on a daily basis. I think that is pretty exciting. Especially for something as crucial as helping to better understand cancer.

Interesting to read more about BOID, I do not really have a machine to run it on at the moment but it may be something I look at next year when I have more time

I installed boid a while back, got a few tokens, but haven't really invested time or energy into it. So many initiatives out there! Thanks for sharing!
