Artwork Explained #14 : No. 5, 1948

in #painting8 years ago (edited)

No. 5, 1948 (number 5) is a painting by Jackson Pollock, an American painter known for his contributions to the abstract expressionist movement.

This Jackson Pollock painting was made on an 8 'x 4' cardboard sheet with thick amounts of brown and yellow paint watered on the leaf, forming a nest-like appearance. It was originally owned by Samuel Irving Newhouse Jr. and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art before being sold to David Geffen and then supposedly to David Martinez in 2006 (although the alleged sale of this painting to Martinez was reportedly refused by his lawyers).

THE SALE OF 2006

Initially, No. 5, 1948 belonged to Samuel Irving Newhouse. The painting was exhibited at the MoMA in New York City. It is acquired by the co-founder of Dreamworks and the founder of Geffen Records, David Geffen, and then sold, according to the New York Times, to David Martinez, a leader of the company Fintech Advisory Ltd, at a private sale for the sum record money of 140 million US dollars. The sale was allegedly carried out by Sotheby's Commissioner Tobias Meyer.

However, Shearman & Sterling then issued a press release for their client, David Martinez, announcing that he did not own the Canvas No. 5, 1948. Josh Baer, the expert in art sales, also claimed that Martinez was not the purchaser of the work.

This sale made No. 5, 1948, the most expensive work (in the category of contemporary art) ever sold, for private sale or public auction. She passed the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt (which was sold at $ 135 million in 2006). David Cook, deputy director of paints at Sotheby's Australia, said that the price of Pollock's paintings will continue to increase since there is little left on the market. He adds that Blue Poles, another Pollock painting, has a value of at least 180 million Australian dollars, perhaps even more than No. 5, 1948.
