Sword and board, bows and arrows, or vials. Which is the best combat style underground?
Carrying around a melee weapon is certainly very important for immediate defense, specially when caught off guard, but unless the cave or tunnels you're exploring is infested with devilish hordes, a simple flask filled with combustive liquid could be the most effective weapon.
Just imagine what foes you might encounter while exploring an abandoned temple lying in the depths of an ancient valley. Goblins or orcs? More like piles of flesh-eating vermin, swarms of frenzied blood sucking bats and other nasty natural but dangerous creatures.
What would you do against dozens of poisonous spiders? Attempt to slash each of them and hope for the best? Well, you can pop up a bottle or combustive oil. It'll burn when coming in contact with the air around you, so sliding it open will be enough to hurl fire at your sorroundings.
This is one hell of an important offensive and defensive maneuver, so make sure to grab a few of these death-inducing fire-like potions at your local Margochemist store. We're having a sale! Write down why you deserve a lifetime supply of these and you just might win two SBI shares.

See, I would have to disagree with your analysis. A combustible liqud in a cave could be a really bad idea. What if there is a pocket of natural gas? What if there's not adequate air flow, and the cave fills with smoke? Or it burns all the oxygen? Dangerous outcome there.
I'd say the best combat style would be bow and arrow with an accompanying short sword for close melee. You can use the bow to take out enemies silently if you're in a large cave, and it could also be used to fire rope across chasms for exploration. It is still problematic in that the bow would be hard to use in tight spaces, which most caves likely would have.
