Origami earrings tutorial

in #origami6 years ago (edited)

One of my favourite origami models is the origami brocade by Minako Ishibashi. This model made from six pieces of paper minaturises beautifully and is easy to make into earrings.

Recently I purchased two coloured paper from Daiso (a Japanese two dollar store in Australia Fair in Qld)

This allowed me to experiment with the unit to create a two coloured model which I feel has turned out quite well.

There are many, many tutorials on how to make this model here is one. Use this mainly to help you put the model together:

To change it into the two coloured version follow the steps below:

image

  1. Start with the colour of the spines face down.
  2. Fold in half.
  3. Fold the half back on itself. (Quartering the paper)
  4. Fold the corners up on the topmost quarter and fold the bottom edge up to cover these corners.
  5. Repeat on other side.
  6. Open model out and turn over.
  7. Fold the bottom left hand corner to meet the folded line just below the top edge.
  8. Bend the spines back and bring up the bottom fold and flatten (see video if this makes no sense.)

image

  1. Turn the paper 180 degrees and repeat tucking this layer under the first.
  2. Turn the model over and fold the corners in such that a square is formed in the middle
  3. Fold six units.

To make earrings you will need a pair of earring hooks (Mine are sterling silver from A and E metals an Australian silver recycling business ~$1.80 a pair plus $10 postage) a pair of flat or ball head pins 30mm (the stem the model will sit on). These can be found on ebay for around a dollar for 50 and a pair of long nose pliers.

Please don't be tempted to buy the earring hooks from ebay as you will regret it.

Coat your model with the sealant of your choice. I have used clear nail polish, however if I was using white or expensive paper I would use watered down archivist glue.

Thread the flat head pin through the model.

Bend the wire back as close to the model as you feel comfortable doing so and then bend the wire forward into a loop.

Thread the earring hook through the loop and press it shut.

Enjoy your new earrings.

Thank you @rentmoney I was feeling quite down today, but this is wonderful and has made my evening.

Your welcome .. sorry you were feeling down today and I'm happy that this helped turn your day into a more pleasant one.

The earrings are beautiful @gmatthe2! I have never seen origami earrings before and I am very tempted to try. I have a couple of earring findings lying around somewhere.

Thank you @marblely. Try starting with a 15 cm square divided into four strips and then cut the squares from the strips this will give you a starting size of 3.75cm, which is a lot more reasonable to work with.

I dont think I've seen this model before, looks really nice. Cool earrings

Thank you, it is a very stable model. It can be dropped on the floor and not fall apart, however if you step on it then you will have to get out the iron flatten the units and put it back together again.

I've seen some really wild things with origami, but NEVER, and I mean NEVER had saw earrings before. This is really innovative.
The only downside I see is that the would draw quite a bit of attention and maybe be a bit heavy?

Attention yes. The earrings themselves are some of the lightest you will ever find. I tend to try and make them as small as possible for the challenge and the fact that I have small ears, but I would be interested to see what a chain of increasing size baubles that almost reach your shoulder would look like.

(Imagines those earrings * 10 reaching the shoulders...)
Kind of reminds me of some crazy fashion I've seen in videogames :D

I really like this jewellery @gmatthe2. I will do my best to make one but I will start with a bigger 'bead' to try and work how to fit in the shapes... Thank you for sharing !

Your welcome :) Pictured above is ~2cm squares, but anywhere up to 4cm squares will still produce a model in an earring size.
