Steemit Open Mic Week 101 - Drum Cover of Read All About It (Emeli Sandé)

in #openmic6 years ago (edited)

With all of the family loss and challenges I've had no choice but to battle through this year, listening to this song has helped me relax.

The last time I was recording for Open Mic on May 15th, my Mom was in a terrible accident in a tornado (I literally got the call while drumming), not long after my Dad died, so I've barely touched my set since. Given that she was finally sent home this past week from all of the hospitals and rehab centers, the drum set finally got turned on again.

This is a slower version of the mainstream song. It's easy-going and mellow. It's a beautiful song, so I did my best to not overpower it. Please stick with it as it builds up. I believe I got the balances right so you can hear everything well. Enjoy.

Look out for some of my drumming in @passion-ground's Open Mic Anniversary Mash-Up.

Here's a link to the song's great lyrics below.

"Read All About It (Pt. III)"

You've got the words to change a nation
But you're biting your tongue
You've spent a life time stuck in silence
Afraid you'll say something wrong
If no one ever hears it how we gonna learn your song?

So come on, come on
Come on, come on

You've got a heart as loud as lions
So why let your voice be tamed?
Maybe we're a little different
There's no need to be ashamed
You've got the light to fight the shadows
So stop hiding it away

Come on, come on

I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream 'til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I'm not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh
Oh-oh-oh...

At night we're waking up the neighbours
While we sing away the blues
Making sure that we're remembered, yeah
Cause we all matter too
If the truth has been forbidden
Then we're breaking all the rules

So come on, come on
Come on, come on,

Let's get the TV and the radio
To play our tune again
It's 'bout time we got some airplay of our version of events
There's no need to be afraid
I will sing with you my friend

Come on, come on

I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream 'til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I'm not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh
Oh-oh-oh...

Yeah, we're all wonderful, wonderful people
So when did we all get so fearful?
Now we're finally finding our voices
So take a chance, come help me sing this
Yeah, we're all wonderful, wonderful people
So when did we all get so fearful?
And now we're finally finding our voices
Just take a chance, come help me sing this

I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream 'til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I'm not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh
Oh-oh-oh...

I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream 'til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I'm not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh

Onward and upward...

Thanks for listening. Let me know you were here.

I see you got another set of good talent aside your sense of humor! :D

Okay, so I came back early... I'll be back again though when I've got my scorecard out - until then...

Your percussive accompaniment here is spot-on, Matt! It's clear you became part of this song - the tenderness and restrained rhythms you deploy throughout embody the passion you have for this song and what it means to you.

This is a most excellent drum cover, brother...
NICE!

Thanks a lot for picking me up. During one of the earlier takes, I was actually crying while playing for the first time in my life. It's crazy to me, but the song apparently runs deeper than I thought, striking nerves on both my Dad and Mom. Very glad you could you could pick up on the vibes since it was technically a simple cover.

Yeah, bro... music has a way of making it deep inside our souls...
I can't begin to tell you just how many times I've been brought to tears listening to various entries...

It's a beautiful thing, man...
It's a blessing and something that I am forever grateful for...

Your personal experience here is equally beautiful...
The vibes are there, and they cannot be ignored...

Much love, brother...

I can't wait to get around to listening to this, brother...
Prolly won't be until Wednesday, however, like our man Arnold says:
I'll Be Back!

Your drumming for the mashup is outstanding, Matt!
Thanks so much for delivering the goods despite all of the roadblocks!
See you, and talk again soon...

Speaking of Arnold, I need to get back to the weights. I have two weeks before Fall baseball starts off and I need to super set the entire time to get some power back.

My pleasure on the mashup track. I never flop on a commitment like that and felt horrible for the delay. Thanks for your patience and glad the drum take is in the right hands now.

Yeah, man... I need to get back to the "iron" too...
You came thru like gangbusters, bro... Thank you for that...
I'll never forget it!

This is awesome, you have a nice feel for this track, nice control, and dynamics! It is always great to see another drummer over here on steemit. I hope everything will get better soon for you, keep on drumming!

Thanks a lot. Nice to meet another drummer as well, and someone who has an eye and ear for nuances that may sometimes go under the radar. Will follow and check out your jams.
