Steemit Open Mic Week 43: J. S. Bach Lute Suite 1 BWV 996 AllemandesteemCreated with Sketch.

in #openmic7 years ago

Some of you might remember back to Sunday of week 40 (or 41?) when I submitted my first post on steemit to enter into the open mic. I didn't know the rules so my video didn't qualify, also I didn't use my good mic to record it so it sounded pretty bad.
Anyway, I decided to perform the same J. S. Bach piece for my week 43 entry. I have not seen anything that says you can't play the same song twice, but if there is please let me know.

Thanks for watching and reading!

Hi @oliverwaterman,

Thank you for this post. I enjoyed listening to your guitar performance of @jsbach's Lute Suite 1 BWV 996 Allemande. Second time posted or not, it was a very nice performance. And I missed the first time, so I'm glad you posted it again!

We have shared this post on the Steemit's Best Classical Music Facebook page and in our latest post, Steemit's Best Classical Music Roundup [Issue #9].

Wow this is really cool! I'm glad to see people are working to get classical music more visibility! I'll be posting something new at least once a week, please use whatever of mine you find appropriate. Thanks!

Deserves my upvote;)

Thanks man!

It is great to see that there is a place where artists deserve to be appreciated and get what they deserve in a society that has apparently forgotten the value of art. It is unfortunate to know that there are miles of talents hidden by the fear of not being solvent to do what they like. I hope that Steemit can change many perspectives and start guiding us back to the path from which we move. Regards!

very nice, im a classical guitarist myself. very dark sounding guitar, did you tune down or is it just mix placement? i recommend to use another room mic and maybe a close mic to get a wider and clearer sound. in addition you could make use of noise cancellation software like lets say RX6 denoise.
Nice to meet a classical guitarist anyway!

Thanks, nice to meet you too! It was tuned down. There's a minor structural problem so I didn't want to put too much tension on the bridge. It's tuned to A standard. This is a new room and I've never recorded tuned this low before. It's very quite. I should have listened to how that placement sounded before, but I get lazy with video. I'm also going to upgrade in a while to using a matched pair of small condensers. Thanks for the software suggestion, I typically can get the noise pretty low if I get the placement right, but if I'm satisfied that a noise cancellation plug-in does the job without reducing what limited fidelity I have that might be the ticket.

thanks for your detailed answer. the two condenser mics will be perfect i guess, just find an angle where you capture more high frequency content. i pretty much like the dark tuning, but its problematic to record. as long as the performance is good, im content anyway. Love Bach, my favorite classical artist of all time. Structured but anything else than boring!

awesome, he's always been my favorite composer as well! It's hard for me to even practice anything else. I've been working on the Fugue from the 2nd lute suite BWV 997 and I'm hoping to have that ready for one of these open mic videos in the next week or so. Yeah the tuning is way too low, there's almost no high frequency to work with at that point. I had it tuned a bit higher in some earlier videos and it came out a bit better. Also there's almost no tension and the tone is muted for the most part. I don't really feel comfortable tuning it any higher until I fix it. I'd tried to EQ some more highs in there, but it just made the noises louder without enhancing the sound.

i can try to fix the sound files for you, if you feel the need to. get the best out of em. free of charge of course

Much appreciated! I'll let you know if I need some help.

I'd totally prefer to just get a solid sound file in the first place, but that may not always be possible. In any case, I can easily do better than the sound on this one by simply doing a few test recordings before doing the actual performance. That and waiting till my new guitar comes in the mail that isn't broken... hopefully. I think they use FedEx so, who knows.

Superb! Wish I could play like that...

Thank you! Well, like my professor says, "only way to know is to learn." He actually never said that, sounds like something he'd say though.

Makes perfect sense to me... However, it's one thing to simply learn, and quite another to "master." You seem to be more of a master than simply one who has learned...

thanks! I'm certainly glad it comes across that way, even though I don't feel quite like a master, yet.

If not already, you are well on your way my friend - the finish line should be in clear view at this juncture! But alas, we never stop learning and getting better as time goes by - therein lays the beauty...

totally agreed! Nothing better than the process

I don't know much (anything) about Bach's Lute Suite 1 BWV 996 Allemande other than what I have just heard, but that will do nicely thank you. Lovely performance. One small point though, I would personally have liked to see a closer shot of you, more especially your left hand. Playing as you do it would be good to watch close-up. A minor point and just IMHO. 👏👏👏

Good point.

haha, @luzcypher agrees with you, it is now an official rule of steemit open mic. Thou Oliver must show left hand work better in video.

Thanks! That's a good point, I will consider that for future videos. Some of my first videos had the closer shots cause I was in a smaller room, it's probably worth trying out a close shot on purpose!

Guess you're lucky to have such a large work space at your disposal. :-)

SOOO lucky! The building I'm in had me in a super small place just last week. Then boom, out of nowhere I'm moved into a much more reasonable apt.

i like how you play with guitar, you professor is right. First you should love something and you can do everything. Keep going i wish you the best in future.

Thanks, you too!

Beautiful piece of music. You coax the strings very well.

thanks a bunch!
