Steemit Open Mic Week #100: 1968 (Cover)

in #openmic6 years ago

"1968" is a song that was written and recorded by Turnpike Troubadours for their 2010 album Diamonds And Gasoline. The song looks back to that year, when both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated, with the hope that someone with the kind of vision and passion for their fellow man that the two of them possessed would come along in the present day.

I hope you enjoy my reading of this song, and thank you all so much for listening!

1968
words and music by EVAN FELKER

There ain’t a thing in the world to take me back
Like a dark-haired girl in a Cadillac
On main street of an old forgotten town
The sun light shines in fine white lines
On weathered stores with open signs
They may as well just close ‘em down

And you look like 1968 or was it ‘69
When I heard you caught a bullet
Well I guess you’re doing fine
And you speak of revolution
Like it’s some place that you’ve been
Well you’ve been a long time gone
Good too see you my old friend

Oh and now that sun has gone away
Replaced instead by silver rays
Of moonlight falling on the avenue
Oh and I could sleep if you would drive
I just can’t keep my mind alive
And you’ve got nothing better else to do

And we've all been looking for you
Like a hobo you walk in
Well how the mighty all have fallen
How the holy all have sinned
Is that the clattering of sabers
Or the cool September winds
Well you’ve been a long time gone
Good to see you my old friend

And there’s just two times a day like this
You find this kind of blissfulness
The sun it sets and rises in the morn
And we’re shakin hands, I rub my eyes
Free up all my alibis
Just a blinking like the day that I was born

And you look like 1968 or was it ‘69
When I heard you caught a bullet
Well I guess you’re doing fine
And you speak of revolution
Like it’s some place that you’ve been
Well you’ve been a long time gone
Good too see you my old friend

And when the rounds were fired that April you were on the balcony
When ten thousand tear drops hit the ground in Memphis, Tennessee
You were a prideful rebel yell among a million marching men
And you’ve been a long time gone
Good to see you my old friend
Well you’ve been a long time gone
Good to see you my old friend

You've a great voice for this song but the lyrics themselves are powerful.

We never really learned much about your countries history bar the war of independence and a little on the civil war but even to my generation these were two powerful and influential men. Men who are still spoken of today for the work that they did and the message that they stood for. I've seen the speech that Kennedy made when he came to our country for a visit and that man could speak.

This song speaks to me. The imagery that is in the lyrics is stunning and so well put together. You really do it justice.

Thank you so much. This is a really powerful song, which is why I love singing it. 1968 was such an important year in our history. Racial tensions were huge. The war in Vietnam was tearing Americans apart. The Summer Of Love was fading into something more violent and dark. And losing those two men, who were the best and brightest hopes we had in such a dark time was hard. I'm glad that this song speaks to you. I'm happy that I was able to bring it to you!

I can see why you went to sing it. Songs that have a real message that aren't afraid to say what is going on can be so powerful. There is something about putting a message into a song that gives it a life of its own.

We still have songs here from hundreds of years ago about the troubles in the country that are sung and have meaning. They have lasted generations and will last a few more.

I haven't heard the song before, getting to hear you sing made me fall in love with the song.

You play the guitar really nicely and you sing beautifully as well, with so much passion. This song seem to have a special place in your heart.

I probably should go find the original and listen to it, but will is sound as good as yours?

Hi Audrey! Thank you so much for your kind words. I really do appreciate you taking the time to listen, and I'm very happy that you like what I have done with this song.

The original is quite good as well. I give a lot of credit to the creators of the music. It's worth checking out!

Its my pleasure!

@dinoromanelli Excellent performance accompanied by your beautiful guitar 🎸. The lyrics to the song you chose are imprecise. Your voice sounds warm and angelic. You sing with all your heart. It was very nice to hear from you. Music conveys peace and joy. Success, my friend.

Thank you so much for your kind words, and for listening!

The pleasure was mine, my friend. Listening to her sweet voice is a very beautiful experience. He's very talented. It is a great blessing to write like this with so much passion. Happy night. Happy night.

Hey Dino! Fantastic job :-) We set a campfire , drink a beer and eat marshmallows. Then we need you with your guitar, your voice and this song! Fits perfect 😀

Thanks for singing and sharing. Ever thought about DTube? The Youtube of Steemit ... ✌️

Do I get to be the first comment? wee!

I didn't know the original (you can call me ignorant there is a lot of AMAZING songs I don't know as I grew up with film scores and instrumentals). But I love your rendition, sounds great, your guitar is always on spot and your vocals has that classic tone of classic rock stars... Oh my how does your guitar sound always so FULL :)
Pris looks at her guitar and feels ashamed...
Dear guitar, tomorrow we'll start to become re-acquainted!

Ha! Pris...I believe the secret is all in the cheap microphone that lives inside my phone! Thank you so much for taking the time to listen. I love this song a lot, and I'm happy to perform it for you!

Haha I highly doubt it, i mean that is your phone mic, bet it would sound as great if we were all gatthered around a bornfire
Music is life

We need to have a big bonfire with you, and me, and Serena, and about ten other people we all would love to play with. That would be the best time. Ever.
