STEEMIT OPEN MIC WEEK 68 - COLD AND STILL - an original song by @bennettitalia (©2018 Bennett Italia)
COLD AND STILL
This is the hardest thing I've ever done
Standing here and watching you run away
It's ok
It's ok
I will stay
I will not follow
And as you fade into the night
I will not turn on the light
I will lie
In the dark
Keeping counsel with my sorrow
But it's a long way down from paradise
From lovers to strangers
From fire to ice
And if this doesn't kill me nothing will
So in a moment of weakness I wrote this song
It belongs to you
But you are gone
Now the words hang in the air
Cold and still
Although the buds are bursting on the trees
And the world's alive with birds and bees
Winter's icy fingers
Grip my heart
Oh I could be strong for you
As strong as you need me to
And the frost on your words lets me know
I need to be strong
'Cause it's a long way down from paradise
From lovers to strangers
From fire to ice
And if this doesn't kill me nothing will
So in a moment of weakness I wrote this song
It belongs to you
But you are gone
Now the words hang in the air
Cold and still
Remember when I held you in my arms and I looked into your eyes?
Something in me broke and I believed
Now you're out of reach and maybe I'll never know
If you could look into my eyes and say we were deceived
So now the buds are bursting on the trees
And the world's alive with birds and bees
But winter's icy fingers
Grip my heart
If I had been strong for you
As strong as you needed me to
Maybe we would not be
So far apart
But it's a long way down from paradise
From lovers to strangers
From fire to ice
And if this doesn't kill me nothing will
So in a moment of weakness I wrote this song
It belongs to you
But you are gone
Now the words hang in the air
Cold and still
Cold and still

Friend, I loved your presentation. Very fresh and emotional. Thanks for playing for us!
Thank you @wilins! So glad you enjoyed it.
Several years ago, when I first wrote this song, it was hard to play it without crying. So I'm glad it retains some of its emotional power :D
Dear @bennettitalia,
Love your lyrics! Catchy melody here too, which I'm finding still in my brain after the video ended- a good sign.
Oh nice! An earworm, glad to hear it ;D
Thanks again for your kind comments @eyedreemit :)
The stuff goosebumps are made of.... I can sense what this song cost you, and applaud you for the alchemist's trick of turning the pain into art!
Thank you @yahialababidi! Yes, that's exactly it
Beautiful! Wistful and plaintive lyrics and the guitar and melody lines perfectly entwine to accentuate them. Love your voice. Really enjoyed this!
Much love - Carl
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it. To tell the truth, I really needed the encouragement today.
Following you :)

Nice original, Bennet... Love the guitar work and the whole thing! Hey, does the "Italia" reference mean that you're Italian?
Thanks @passion-ground! Really glad you enjoyed it :)
Yes, I am (mostly) of Italian derivation. As a child I lived in Italy for a year, and then had 4 years of bilingual schooling in the US, so... I WAS fluent in Italian at one time, although I'm pretty rusty by now :D
..."Italia" also happens to be my last name :D
With a last name like that, how could you not have a bunch of "Italian" in you! :-) I'm 100% - both parents, and both grandparents on either side... Beyond some select foul language utterances, I can't speak a word of it! ha! :)
LMAO no doubt! Curse words were the first things my classmates taught me XD
My parents grew up in and around an old Italian neighborhood in the South Bronx. 3 of my grandparents are Sicilian, one is Finnish.
I was born in the Bronx! My grandfather arrived on Ellis Island and made residence in Harlem for many years before moving his family to the Bronx, which at the time, seemed like "the countryside." All of my Italian relatives are from Naples and Cacerta. Small world, huh! Ha! :-)
Yes it is! That's awesome :D
I did grow up in the city (Manhattan), but it's been a long time since then. I've lived all over the place, but rural Colorado for the past 7 years, about as different from NYC as you can get in the US.
