The Bahau Dayak Wood Monkey - Indonesian Artefacts

in #onartbali7 years ago (edited)

OnARTBali is one of my passionate projects due to my big love for Indonesian art, as well as artisans.

Most of this breathtaking collection is up for sale and stored in my Balinese family's galleries, back on my beloved Bali Island.

I used to spend endless hours in those treasure boxes to document some of Pak Wayan's findings of aprox. 6000 pieces. I wrote about this interesting, unique man and a little bit about my art-adventure in one of my previous articles, hope you will enjoy.

Meet Pak Wayan, The "Unknown" Balinese ICON, How A Tour Driver became an Art Collector of Indonesian Treasures

The first moment you meet Pak Wayan, you feel the passion, you want to hear his stories! A simple Balinese man who traveled most of his life to secretive and hidden places in his country, so rich in culture and age-old traditions, to collect "Beauty", Indonesian Art since the 50's !

The Bahau( I called it Bahao) Dayak Borneo tribal, ethnic figure from Kalimantan

I finally make the effort to introduce some of those breathtaking artefacts one by one on STEEMIT and I am more than happy to give detailed information per email : [email protected], in case you are interested to buy. I created an amateur website on weebly to show 1/8 of all pieces for sale.

This wonderful statue represents an ancestral figure in Kalimantan

They say that it resembles that of a human/dog and they also say that the dog is highly respected in the area as a guardian. It is believed that this figure is a good spirit and protects the village and it's people. - Source onARTBali.com

Dayak People are the natives of Borneo

The Indigenous people of the Heart of Borneo are commonly known as Dayak. The term was coined by Europeans referring to the non-Malay and non-Muslim inhabitants of central and southern Borneo. The best and still unsurpassed study of a traditional Dayak religion in Kalimantan is that of Hans Scharer, Ngaju Religion: The Conception of God among a South Borneo People; translated by Rodney Needham (The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff, 1963).- Source Wikipedia
