Vintage Cures
Cold Season
Being that it is starting to get chilly out now here in Michigan, cold season is surely right around the corner!
This made me think of putting up some pictures of some vintage medicinal products that I found recently in a property I inherited.
First up we have the trusty hot water bottle from the Rexall Drug Company. I suppose before the heating pad, a hot water bottle was a source of comfort for many.I was amazed at how good the box looks and the bottle itself looks like the day it was made!
Next up we have the trusty Mentholatum.
It is a creamy paste that is strong smelling. If you had a bad cold, your mom would rub some on your chest and the menthol fumes would help open up your sinuses.
This jar had to be many decades old and still smelled as strong as I remembered it!!
OUCH!
If you were a kid growing up in the 1970's, I bet you will remember this! They would swab that red liquid of death right into the cut and WOW! would it burn!!!! The cure was worse than the disease!
Thanks for stopping by!

Great pics... Mercurochrome was for sissies... Iodine- now that had some zip to it! You forgot this...
That stuff would cure anything (especially not wanting to go to school)
Oh yeah! How could I forget lol. I didnt find any of that in the home, they must have used it all up LOL
I think it cured more imaginary illnesses and laziness than real ones... When it came down to going to school or getting a dose of Cod Liver Oil- school didn't seem all that bad!
The mercurochrome brings back some memories of hiding cuts and scrapes from my mom to avoid having it applied. My wife uses Mentholatum today.
LOL exactly!
The old cures are by the best, my favourite one is still of course of leeches - cure anything they will - as recommended by the great Hoffman (owner of the largest leech farm in Europe)
LOL they are using maggots now to clean out some wounds coz they only eat the dead tissue...
I don't remember that red liquid of death. I still use a hot water bottle and vaporub though.
Great post :)
I bet your dad does! It was a little before your time :)
Don't use all that mentholatum all at once, lol. It's amazing how long some things will last. But don't go getting sick just so you can use all your new stuff! Maybe you can use your hot water bottle on an ice fishing trip! ; )
All that Mentholatum at once would kill a horse methinks LOL
And such balm in your region is not used? In Russia it is very popular already probably 50 years! It has a strong smell from a cold can be spread to the nose, or spread on the chest for coughs. Sore back and legs can be spread, the pain will pass. Oh my God, he even used to repel mosquitoes! Super agent 33 misfortunes!

Oh yes so you have it there too! I guess it would repel mosquitoes lol! Very cool and thanks for showing it to us!
Oh yeah. Looks like things that are probably still in my mom's linen cupboard. She would certainly never throw them away!
LOL exactly!
Wow, thanks for this one!
Talk about old memories! Those were our go-to childhood remedies! ;)
😄😇😄

Thanks. Hey they must have worked coz we are still here lol.
Hahahahaha! Yeah, they worked a lot better than a lot of the modern garbage! ;)
