NextColony Contest Story...The beginning!

Fallout from Earth

Everyone our age remembers the day when we heard they were ready to launch the first transporter ships off the planet. It was the most exciting and scariest time of our lives.

We heard about other planets that were able to support human life. As far as the research of the planets they didn't have much time to dig to deep and know all about it before we arrived there. We were short of time. Our planet was on the verge of collapse from the Great War.
The radio active fallout made life very impossible. With the shrinking ozone layer, dried up rivers, and melting polar caps, our time was running out for this planet. All we could do was dream about what could be the future of our species. Only the great unknown was waiting out there and we need to keep the human race alive.

There was word of other people around Earth that were work on the same plans as us to get the hell off this dead rock. After all it's just rumors that you hear. It's not like we can flip on a tv and watch the news about what's going on. When we get into space I'm sure there will be a eye opening experience since after all, we can see what we have done to this planet.

With all the work that needed to be done there wasn't much time for anything. There was plenty of latest technology tools that helped speed the process up with building the ships and preparing for other work for when we get to the other planets.

Just because you can make it off one planet doesn't mean everything will be fine on the other. We will need to resupply fuel for the ship and that means there will be mining on other planets to get the resources we need to make it on our journey. The bitter sweet truth about uranium is that it caused the collapse of our planet from the nukes, but also thats what we need to fuel our ships. We need more copper for the wiring of our ships, but for now it's just got to do with the minimal amount of supplies.

Do we know of other groups that are getting off this planet that might not like us? We don't know and therefore we must be prepared for anything. What about aliens that may habitat a planet we go to? What then? We must be ready!

My name is James Meeseeks. This is my story of the day we left Earth.

The day finally came for us to leave. As we gather a few personal items that we could take with us, we had a hard time with letting go. It was limited room so mostly pictures and stuff so we could still have the memories of where we came from. Even if this planet was about to die it still was our home. There was no time to dwell on the past. The earthquakes started to get worse.

We all loaded on the transport ship in preparation to leave. Then we heard the count down.
10…
9…
8…
7…
6…
5…
At this point everything was shaken and rumbling on the ship!
4…
3…
2…
1…
Then it happen. BOOM!!! As the ship started to take off the more it seemed to shake. We all started to get nervous but there was no turning back now. It took several minutes to get into space but once we got up there you could tell. Things that were not tied down started to float around. This was a totally different experience than most expected.

Now that we were up here we could finally look out to see. The Earth was in such bad shape, more than anyone thought. There so much debris floating around Earth that it kinda made it hard to get a good look at it. We started to plot our course that we were going to travel and then we started noticing other ships flying off Earth.

Nobody wanted to stick around and find out if they are friends or enemies! We slingshot off the earth and headed off to find our new home. The course was going to take us over a year to get to. We prep the ship for auto pilot got things ready for the journey. To save on resources we had to go into cryogenic sleep. The one thing that's good about cryo-sleep is it feels as if you just blinked your eyes.
As I slide into my pod all I could do was worry about the future. Not knowing what was ahead of us is a very frightening thing to experience. That is all that was running in my mind as I hit the button to turn my pod on. I set the time for 1 year and 2 months on my pod. When I wake up the date will be 20th of May 2085. But it's not going to feel like it. Time will tell as I hit the button to activate the pod.

BEEP BEEP BEEP!!

What the hell is going on!
