The flipped and switched perspectives on race spread

Chris Buck the famed photographer, released a photo series with O, The Oprah Magazine, called, “Let’s Talk About Race.”

Asian women getting pedicures from white women.

A white girl standing in front of an aisle full of only black dolls.

A Latina woman getting a beverage poured by a white maid.

Chris Buck said: I was actually surprised when I moved here how little talk of race there was. It’s been happening for a long time. Who are we kidding? My grandchildren will be talking about this still.

I think it's time for “Let’s Talk About Race,” like the title of these pictures.

I disagree.

  1. Picture: I think asian people do have better knowledge in stuff like messages. Many of the spa methods are unknown in historic european and american cultures.
Also nobody is forcing asian people to work in a pedicure salon and many asian people in america are rich enough to actually get one themself.

  2. Barbie was developed in a white society and meant to be a rolemodel for young girls. But I dont want to defend barbie. She is skinny, blonde and artificial, I never liked her. Do not buy Barbie and there will be no Barbie.

  3. The English butler was always known to be the best servant. Being able to make him say anything in that adorable polite english accent <3.

I don't want to be mean. I like you @ramengirl . This topic is just really important to me.

@thegermandude, I have to disagree. I think you're unfairly misconstruing @ramengirl's intentions here.

Also nobody is forcing asian people to work in a pedicure salon and many asian people in america are rich enough to actually get one themself.

Are you aware of the relationship between nail salons and human trafficking?
Thousands of asian women are tricked or trafficked into working in nail salons in the US alone.

The New York Times interviewed more than 150 nail salon workers and owners, in four languages, and found that a vast majority of workers are paid below minimum wage; sometimes they are not even paid. Workers endure all manner of humiliation, including having their tips docked as punishment for minor transgressions, constant video monitoring by owners, even physical abuse. Employers are rarely punished for labor and other violations.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't you just have a long exchange with @dwinblood about how slavery still exists in the US prison system? This is simply another form of modern day slavery.

In my opinion, I don't see this article as being racist. All the artist is doing is to point out that there's a class system in the US and in other western societies that is rarely addressed. It's uncomfortable for people to confront, so they prefer not to engage. I feel the artist here is saying we should have a dialog about race and class. I really don't see anything inherently racist about having a dialog.
Why shouldn't people talk about race?

I think we an all agree that Barbie is a terrible product that perpetuates an impossible body image onto young minds.

Are you aware of the relationship between nail salons and human trafficking?

No, I was not. And of course I condemn this kind of slavery. Thanks for the hint.

Why shouldn't people talk about race?

I am glad to talk about. I just didnt want to chant "great article", even though I disagree with the points made.

Guess I need to make a whole post apologizing to @ramengirl and explain what I actually meant to say. One of my main critics about the (oprah) article is how it paddles a "we vs them" mentality by bashing caucasians...

I feel bad that my comment reads like I am trying to insult @ramengirl. That was never my intention. I love trying to be funny that is one of the main reasons I wrote

But an article calling all western societies racist is.... well... racist. :D

I will try to avoid cheap puns on serious topics like this in the future.

I think this is all a misunderstanding and doesn't call for self censorship. The way i read the article could very well be very different from the way you intended it to come across.

This made me laugh "chant great article", lol. If you mean the Oprah Magazine article, I would agree with you that most of the publication is pure shite. But there was no link in @ramengirl's post that i could find, just one quote from the artist. I can't speak for @ramengirl, but i don't think she was praising the article, just showing the artwork/photography and posing a question.

I've noticed that you've engaged in insightful commentary more than most who join the platform, that is commendable and i usually enjoy your input. We just disagree here. Happy that you responded to clarify what you meant.

I've noticed that you've engaged in insightful commentary more than most who join the platform, that is commendable and i usually enjoy your input.

Thanks, mate. I also thank you for your response to my first comment. I was afraid my writing could be understood wrong, so it is good to see you describing a different interpretation of my words. At this point I feel like I furthered the division on this topic which is the polar opposite of what I wanted to do!

I am writing a post to clarify as we speak.

The original oprah article, fyi

Couldnt resist clickbait title ^^*, but I think it helps to understand where I am comimg from.

She actually called all western societies racist?

No, I just said let's talk about race with those pictures. Those are interesting pictures, right? I never said that all western societies racist or westerners are racist. Maybe @thatgermandude's comment made people misunderstood which is I don't really want.

I will try to rephrase. It was never my intention to call you racist. I was just trying to argue against the message portrayed in the article.

I am sorry, I never meant to insult you, @ramengirl. I just wanted to discuss the topic...

I deleted "There are racists out there, no doubt. But an article calling all western societies racist is.... well... racist. :D" out of my initial comment.

I tried to be funny, but being funny is not worth hurting you. I am sorry.

no, and I dont believe that is what ramengirl is thinking. I meant the original oprah article.

Great post on important topic !

I wrote a post to explain why I dont share the opinion presented in the oprah article.
