Is Ikea Furniture More Dangerous Than Cannabis?

in #news8 years ago

In one of the biggest settlements of its kind, Ikea just recently agreed to pay roughly $50 million to the families of three boys who were allegedly killed after Ikea dressers fell onto them. In every one of the cases, the same furniture was the culprit and that was the Malm line of dressers from the furniture dealer.

The settlement allegedly comes just two days after meditation with the families of the victims, and though the families might be relieved to have the legal process finally be coming to an end, there is of course no amount of money that can ever replace the loved one that they lost.

And these aren't the only deaths to be reported in relation to Ikea furniture either.

In previous wrongful death lawsuits that were filed involving Ikea, it was previously argued that Ikea had known about possible dangers that their dressers might have posed but Ikea fought back in saying that the instructions indicated that the dressers needed to be anchored to the wall which they allegedly hadn't been.

This makes at least 7 incidents where individuals have lost a loved one because of an incident that involved furniture from Ikea. The first incident that was reported to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission was back in 1989.

Compare those deaths from an overdose of cannabis: zero.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there isn't one incident of anyone fatally overdosing on cannabis for the year of 2015. It's alleged that not a single person has ever died from a cannabis overdose.

Considering the raging battle that still continues to this day against a plant, it's humorous to compare the "danger" between the two, and between cannabis and a number of other daily activities which we engage in and items which we buy which do have the possibility to contribute to a dangerous scenario.

Honestly, I am not sure one should really do this comparison... (says someone who has a malm dresser at home ^^ ).

This post is AWESOME! Keep up the good work! :D

Cool post. Who reads the fine print anyways?

Why compare Ikea furniture deaths to weed deaths???

Did those dressers have marijuana plants on top of them?

If so we know why the kids were climbing them and thus marijuana is partially to blame.

A dresser is a common item that most people wouldn't ever be afraid of or think about contributing to their death, same thing as a regular 4L pale, or even a common staircase... but these things are responsible for more deaths than cannabis, and many people use that irrational fear of cannabis as fuel for support of prohibition

But I learned everything I need to know from this video
