RE: Everyone Can Have A Game or Contest! (its easy and fast!)
I love such practical tips. I’ve been thinking about setting up a game or contest to grow my number of followers, but I didn’t know how to get started, and I’m (still) a little scared about how to keep a good overview. On top of that, it’s hard to decide which criteria one should use to choose a winner.
Forgive me for saying this, but in spite of the fact that you say you need to be clear when telling contestans what they should do, your example contest is a bit confusing to me.
You ask 3 simple questions, and will be rewarding ‘the best one’ with 1/2 of the SBD generated by the post.
I must admit that this makes me wonder what will be seen as ‘the best one’... Will it be the most original one? It could also mean you’re looking for the funniest one, or the one on which the contestant can give an answer and use valid arguments...
It is rather undetectable what is expected from me.
If I give you a short but valid answer to your questions, I’d be doing exactly what is asked.
For example:
A cat
A retro Cadillac
Portugal
I just wonder how you’re going to pick ‘the best one’ if every other contestant will be answering in the same format?
Maybe I’m expected to answer those questions in a completely different way, like
A monkey, so I don’t have to peal my own bananas anymore
The DeLorean from Back To The Future, because I’d like to see what the future looks like
Hawaii, because I’ve always wanted to wear coconut shells as a bikini.
I guess those are not the answers you’re expecting, but who knows... maybe you do...
By the way, I don’t mean to ruin your contest. Actually I want to learn from your post. I don’t want to give you a hard time about it, but since I’ve got the tendency to overthink everything, I always end up making remarks like this.
Because of the same reason, I haven’t been able to successfully set up a contest; I always get stuck on the part where the criteria should be defined and communicated.
It will be really interesting to see how this contest will develop and how completely diffrent or completely the same the answers will be - all depends on each contestants interpretation of the rules.
I’m always in for a small social experiment like this, so I’m really curious about how it will turn out.
And of course i’ just as curious for what will be following tomorrow... :0)
I liked the monkey answer the best the way, peeling bananas is something I really have a hard time with too lol
I often have that sort of reaction. That's why I find multiple choice tests (for example) so hard to answer. I keep looking for the subtext: which answers might be considered "correct". For some questions, I can find justifications for two or three of the possible answers.
Thanks for offering a suggestion and giving others a suggestion! That is cool of you @wentong-syhhae :)
hahaha.. now you are really messing with my head... I saw that same answer from another mike with lots of numbers behind the name lol
I do like the fact that you make clear people don’t need to upvote or resteem. I’m working on article addressing the fact the it’s clearly stated in the FAQ that it is not allowed to force people to upvote a post to be able to enter the contest. You’re the first one that doesn’t make it a requirement. And that’s exactly the reason why I’m going to resteem it - :0)
@simplymike I actually scrolled down to see what everyone else answered for the car question before I answered and that's how I found this conversation. Since you are talking about contest design I wanted to share some of the things I have learned. Take a peek at the evolution of my meet and greet type contests if you would like. Week 1 and now Current I stopped asking for upvotes and started offering to split the reward as I had read the FAQ in between. Also suggest people can vote 2 different ways with different weights. An upvote is worth half as much as a comment when I score my competitions to prevent bots or spam.
good job royal at helping her out! I like how you show the progression.
Thanks, I’ll check out first thing in the morning
thank you for the resteem... yes I see a lot of them that do that so I don't think the rule is really enforced, but the way I see it is I want people to show up and engage so why should I charge them to do it? I'm doing the games to have fun and to meet people. (and in this case to help them learn about how is a way to get started)...
btw, no matter how you do your game, I hope you just take the chance and do it. We will promote it as long as you put the #newbieresteemday tag on it so we can find it. Also make sure and let me know that you started it so I can play in it too ;)
And there is nothing scary about the game once you do it the first time. Trust me, its a real blast :)
I can’t seem to decide which way I want to go with it. Still brainstorming...
Accidently, I posted this answer using my old account. So I deleted it and reposted it with my new account to make it less confusing for myself. Sorry if that confused you... :0)
lol.. yes I knew... I was playing with you
I love you answer though seriously for one major reason... It is genuine! You will find when you are on the other side of a contest, that is probably the thing you will value most.
Another good part of your answer is that your personality came out. You not only offer praise, you also give an insight into your mind. We can see your thoughtfulness and also your humor. So your post right now is the best. Not because I told you what to say, but because it just is (at this point).
So you have to remember that while you may "tend to overthink it", most do not. You throw it out there and they give it back to you in their own way. As long as you tell them what to do (like answer the 3 questions), then you won't know what you get until you get it. Trust me you will see some pretty interesting people giving you answers you never expected.
While I agree with you that my post was a little confusing (I can take it ;) )... I will also tell you that it was about as simplified as I could do it. I'm trying to 1) teach people how to "host" a contest 2) prep everyone for all the contests coming next week (in which we will help to market and increase attention and 3) demonstrate it in the same post with my own little "mini-contest". I will certainly help anyone do a much more complicated version, but the idea here is to move to the lowest and simplest form that any newbie can do.
The reasons behind it are more complex though. To succeed here in steemit, people need to learn how to "engage' with others. Play in their games, go to their posts and comment, and help others in various ways. That's how you get big here. And it starts small and simple. Anyone can do it and they will get better at it the more they try.
I made the SBD rule to help those that feel they have to offer an "upfront" reward, which THEY DO NOT. They can just give away some of their SBD earnings once their posts pays off... The bigger purpose isn't to make money today, it is to build friendships and relationships like we have built in a short time. To do that people need to be encouraged to comment and talk and share ideas in various ways.
My observations from my interactions with you is that you are very very precise and high quality. That is a good thing. But when you hold a contest you might just want to start with a simple one and get as many to participate as possible. The key here is that many have never played the game and we want to make it easy for them to get started. Once you get your game going, then the next versions you can make tougher and tougher. And eventually you will build a following of people that are like you.
So I believe in casting a wide net (especially if you want to help newbies to particpate), so that you can grab the participation of many.
As for the way to pick the winner, there are so many ways you could do so. Heck you could just offer a participation prize and many will still come... It seems like many would actually care about the prize, but once they enter they realize they actually have a little fun. They would probably come back for free and play again, the money and the prizes are really just a small incentive to explore.
You are the judge of your own game and you can decide based on whatever you want. Like in this game I didn't say how the "best" answer was going to be picked. I've learned to not "box" myself in a corner if I'm not sure exactly what I want, because honestly I get answers (like yours) that just stand out. Sometimes its the humor and sometimes it the genuineness, but its always interesting.
I always like to see what's in your mind simplymike... I always enjoy our chats! If you are on discord, you can DM me at davemccoy#2479 and I will discuss this further too.
I do hope you try to do one next week because we (#newbieresteemday) will be coming out with a program designed to help the newbies to find your games and encouraging them to participate. It should be good for you and it should be good for them. We are just trying to facilitate what makes the community stronger ("engagement")
congratulations @simplymike you are the winner!!! The sbd payout of this small game was .556 and you get 1/2 of it... or $0.278 ... Enjoy it!!! :)
Cool! Thanks :0)
Thanks for providing this opportunity
