Needleworkmonday 4-2-18- Tools and old projectssteemCreated with Sketch.

Just finished my latest hat, been working on it while listening to The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett on Audible. It went really fast and I decided to include all my tools in the photo.
From the left-
A small hooked needle for finishing and weaving in the ends
Scissors for trimming the yarn
Place markers in various styles. I usually use the snowflake as my first stitch marker so I know when I get all the way around.
My needles, size 8- a 16 inch round and 4 double pointed for when bringing the top together.

Last week @neumannsalva showed off her unfinished pieces and asked about mine. Here is one:

It is a geocaching themed cross stitch being made for some friends who moved out of the area and we don't see very often anymore. I put it down so I can work on a wedding cross stitch and never picked it back up. After looking at the pattern and pulling it out to take this picture, it only looks like it would be a few more days of work so I might go ahead and finish it this year. :)
At some point I'll pull out the baby blanket cross stitch I was working on in high school that I never finished, but it's at the bottom of a bunch of storage stuff and cannot be accessed right now. So instead I'll show you one of my first cross stitch designs ever. It was for a scissor case that I did in 1993. This design has actually moved on to being used in our geocaching life, as I repurposed it for a signature item that we use and leave in geocaches to show that we have been there and found them.

And a few of our path tag signature items, we have a hundred made at a time and change the color of the outer area every time we have more made. These are traded to geocachers we meet and people collect them.

And to show off my first knitting project, a purse with an I-cord shoulder strap:

This week I'm heading to Green Bay, Wisconsin for a few days of work and then from there driving to Wausau, Wisconsin where I will work for a few more days before I fly home on Friday. Let's hope the weather isn't too terrible, it looks like they had a bit of snow over the last few days, which will make geocaching a little bit harder. I'm taking the second Mitten as my knitting project and hoping to get it started on my flight.

Hi @jamethiel! Oooh, I love your toolkit photo. That's a really cool idea. Did you know that @alwaysthebryde is also into geocaching? I cant seem to figure it out and always walk into walls and trip! Love your purse!!!!!! Happy #NeedleworkMonday my dear, and have a wonderful time on your trip.

Thank you, I thought people might like to get an idea of what you might need for knitting a hat. My toolkit is generally the same for most projects, with the addition of a tapestry needle and a small emergency sewing kit.
Geocaching is all about awareness- where you are, where you are going, what you are looking for, who is around to see... and I have definitely tripped over walls and run into things... :)
Thanks!

Okay, it's not just me. LOL!

Ah pathtags. Fun little items, and people do seem to like them.

This is a great post! I love seeing what tools people use and which ones they like the best. Did you make those little snowflake markers? They are sweet.

I love geocaching too....though I haven't done much of it for awhile. The design on your needle case and coins is pretty cool. Reminds me of trail map. Did you design it?

You're first knit project turned out very well! I love it. Do you use it regularly? (yes..I'm nosy)

Thanks for sharing!

I found the Snowflake and star micro crocheted stitch markers somewhere in Oregon, I believe at a yarn store.
I did design the pattern for the scissor case and coins. It was based on an x marks the spot idea, it was also supposed to be kind of a compass rose. It didn't turn out quite like I expected but worked well.

The purse is not regularly used because it has a small hole in the bottom from being used too much. :) I'll fix it at some point when I find a similar yarn. I used to use it a lot when I was running out of the house and just needed something to hold a book.

A very interesting post... Besides the knitting and stitching I learnt about those geocaching tags (wow)... And the hat turned out great @jamethiel.

The pathtags are a neat way to connect with other players. Something like a challenge coin or token. You exchange them and can either keep or trade as you wish. I've had folks contact us directly for our oldest colors of tags because it is pretty rare to find any of them. People collect the oddest things!
Thank you!

great that you found your old projects! I liked the wallet :) the hat is very nice. judging by your weather, you still have time to put it on

oh and I forgot, I am in love so interested in crafting equipment!!! I am thinking about writing a needle review post and I am always interested which materials other crafters use.

Love the bag you knitted - nice yarn! You sure have a lot of interests, geocaching sounds great. I was on a multiday backpacking trip along the Pacific Crest trail and ran into a couple geocachers who had hiked in on a short trail and found the target (?) near our camp. Pretty cool!

A great way to describe geocaching is goal-oriented hiking! I've always wanted to do a hike on the Pacific Crest area, we've done some hikes on the Appalachian Trail as well as the Continental Divide Trail due to geocaching.

I resteemed this beautiful article. It so amazing to see how long you are already crafting and how designs from one genre (cross stitch) evolve into another area (geocaching). I have only general knowledge about geocaching and have never heard of these individualized tokens, but already love them :-D
I really hope you will proceed on the cross-stitch artwork (I love the little duck an d the frog) because it is so unique in its designe (I only know more conventional cross stitch images, which never show geocaching)
I cross my fingers for good weather !!!

Thank you for the resteem and kind words! The duck represents a commonly found toy in geocaches- rubber duckies. A friend used to leave mini ones for people to find. And the frog represents FrogWarts, a local geocacher who leaves mini tropical frog toys.
Every image on the bottom row will represent a geocacher in our local group. 1 of the folks I wanted to represent passed away suddenly, which is another reason I haven't picked it up again.

Yay for finishing your hat!! I really love your first knitting project!!! It looks like you used yarn that’s not the easiest to work with for that project...kudos to you! Thanks for sharing some of your archived projects with us :)
