Back in business!

in #needleworkmonday5 years ago

You may know that my partner and I, have recently moved to a new home. It was a rather time-consuming move but finally everything is in it's place!
And most importantly for today's post, the loom is in it's place and ready to go!

IMG_1399.jpg

But first things first. I am just the photographer. The weaver is Fotini, my long-lasting partner to this miraculous journey that we call life :)

IMG_1353.jpg

The first project on the loom's new home is actually the first thing that any weaver learns (at least in Greece). A rug made of old clothes or linen or any kind of fabric, cut in stripes that are used instead of thread.

IMG_1333.jpg

So Fotini's childhood linen began their transformation. From sheets, to skeins of cloth stripes and eventually a new textile!

IMG_1379.jpg

We have a name in Greece for this kind of rugs, we call them "kourelou". I wasn't able to find a translation for this specific word but I'll be glad to hear if you are making something similar in your country.

The procedure is the same as with any thread but it is much faster since the cloth stripes are much wider.

IMG_1338.jpg

This kind of rugs used to be an indivisible part of every household's economy but nowadays can only be found as folklore items, made with an industrialized way and very cheap, too. But the joy of making something on your own cannot be bought!

I should probably have waited till the new rug was of the loom but Fotini is going to make a couple more before she cuts the warps and I didn't want to miss #needleworkmonday initiated by @crosheille! So I promise that there will be a follow up post, soon!

I love your photos - and what they show. They tell about more than just "this is how we weave a rug", in a way looking at it one feels the joy and the "finally" of sitting again at the loom.

In German we call these rugs "Flickenteppich" - literally scrap rugs. And using repurposed fabric gives them worth - I bet they keep the feet even more warm because you know what they were made from!

Enjoy the new home and have a !BEER

Thanks a lot @muscara for your beautiful words and the German translation of "kourelou", good to know :)
Cheers!

Hey @fotostef, here is a little bit of BEER for you. Enjoy it!

You couldn’t have said it better;

But the joy of making something on your own cannot be bought!

This statement rings so much truth! There is so much joy and pride in making a beautiful piece by your own hands.

It is always a pleasure visiting your posts and I especially love when you share the beautiful work of Fotini. She is very talented and the way you show her work makes one feel as if we are sitting right there in the room with her. Thank you for sharing this week ~ 😊

Thanks a lot, from both of us, @crosheille :)

Absolutely! 😊

Congrats on getting settled into the new place :) Beautiful shots of the loom in action, and really cool to repurpose old fabrics into a new rug. Awesome stuff! @tipu curate 2
