NeedleWorkMonday - Crochet Baby Cardigan - Part 1
Happy #NeedleWorkMonday everyone! Today is also my 37th Birthday 🎉!!! I can’t believe I’ll be 40 in a few years because I still feel 20!!! 😜
Anyhoo! I am so excited I had the chance to work on my baby girl’s crochet cardigan! I wanted to get going on this so she can wear it this Fall. This pattern was created by our very own needleworker @neumannsalva! She graciously shared this beautiful pattern with the needlework community and I couldn’t wait to try my hands at it!
It really got me motivated when I saw @cryptocariad’s finished cardigan as well as @shanibeer’s finished cardigan! These ladies did a lovely job following her pattern and both reported it was easy to follow.
The Yoke
When I first learned how to do the fsc (foundation single crochet) stitch it took me almost 2 days to figure it out. I was so frustrated I couldn’t get it that it brought me to TEARS! My husband suggested I put it away and come back to it in a couple of days but I was determined to get it figured out. Sometimes we overthink things when it could just be a simple step.
Now I can do it with no struggle at all. So when I saw that @neumannsalva’s pattern called for it I approached it with proudness :D
I loved crocheting up this first part . It was fun watching this come into shape. I kept measuring it to my baby to make sure she would have plenty of room . I want to make this bigger than what she is now so she’ll have room to grow.
Separating Sleeves
Making the sleeve openings was a lot of fun. I love seeing my projects progress as I crochet. I kept imagining my baby’s little arms going in there. 🤗
I love that I will be able to fit the sleeves exactly to her arm length. I will make them a little longer so she will have room to grow length wise as well.
The Body
This is where I ended late last night. I haven’t tried the finished body on my daughter yet. I will do that sometime today before I move on. She is quite long so I need to make sure it goes down to her waistline.
Let me say I am having a lot of fun and can’t wait to show you more as it develops. My husband helped me choose the color scheme. It will consist of pretty Fall colors! The pattern has been easy to follow and I was able to do this much in just one sitting. Thanks again @neumannsalva for this beautiful easy to follow pattern!! 💗
Hope you had the best birthday ever gorgeous!! You're as young as you feel....I am so envious of your 20-year-old self <3
Thank you so much sweet Mama!! I totally agree we are as young as we feel. 😁
Happy Birthday Yopung lady :)
Thats such a beautiful cardigan :)
Thank you! I feel young! 😄
Thanks so much! I’m excited to finish it! ☺️
Feeling young is a good thing, I try to feel young but its bene a truggle with the heat here and moving office of recent :)
Any type of work in the heat would make it hard to feel young. I totally get it...the heat drains me.
Happy birthday! I laughed when I read about your frustration with single foundation crochet - I'd been in exactly that place! It took me ages to work it out, I may even have had to sleep on it. The jacket looks charming and is coming along nicely - as you say, it is lovely to be able to fit your garment on your baby as you go along.
Hope you are having a lovely day with a lovely evening planned. Do you have family rituals for birthdays? We used have cake and special little cakes with different coloured icing and tiny little bread finger rolls with delicious fillings and balloons. All the children would be so excited!
Thank you so much for the Birthday wishes!!
Haaa! Wasn’t that frustrating? So I’m not the only one lol. I could not get my brain around it for some reason...I was way off every time. 😅
Thank you! I am really glad I was able to get around to it. I have so many things lined up that I just said I’m starting this tonight regardless.
We don’t have much planned. However my mother in law just took my family out and told me they would be back. I think they are trying to surprise me with something. We normally do Birthday cakes too but this time we didn’t. Bread finger rolls with fillings sound yummy!! 😋
Hehe ... always suspicious when the family goes out ... have a lovely time 😘
😁 it’s so much fun!! The kids don’t think I know somethings up!
Thanks will do! 😘
woohoo happy bday!!!
LOVE that cardigan!! Hope you have a lovely day of being spoilt and not have to do any chores :)
Thank you @vincy!!
It was a great day of spoilation lol!! No chores at all! 😁
Woohoo that’s great!! Hehe glad to hear it!

Happy Birthday to you: herzlichen Glückwunsch and alles Liebe, Gesundheit und Glück!!!
I hope you were celebrated intensely and got some good cake, hugs and love!! (Do you celebrate birthdays?)
And with the cardigan... I am more excited than you, believe me. I am so happy you came so far without finding gruesome mistakes. Your cardigan looks super cute and neat and I am curious of the next colour you will use. I hope we get some sweet 'model' photos when you are finished.
And the foundation crochet is so helpful, but I also have to look them up sometimes (when I did not make them in a long while) and at first I found it hard to determine in which loop to crochet :-DDD
Right now, I am still excited about @shanibeers standing dc (for beginning a round)
Sending you a big birthday hug
Thank you sweet lady!!! 😘 I was spoiled all day and pampered with lots of love!
I’m pleased to know how excited you are! It was smooth going...I think that’s why I got so far. I really didn’t want to stop but it was wee hours in the morning.
I’m going to see if I can at least take some pictures of her from neck down to the length of the cardigan. Notice how I only took shots of her feet when she wore @apanamamama’s cowgirl boots? My husband and I decided for safety precautions, not to show pictures of the kiddos on social media any more. It’s a bitter sweet thing because I love showing off my kids and sharing them with you all but there’s just too many crazies in this world today. I know that we already have pics of them that will forever be on this blockchain but there won’t be any pics of them as they grow up. So I’m really gonna shoot for getting just a shot of the cardigan on her ;)
That’s funny because I had to relook at how to do the fsc numerous times too. Especially when I hadn’t done it in awhile. Now I’m at the point where I probably won’t forget how to do it again. This is definitely going on my tutorial list for my series. I’m going to make a clear video showing exactly which stitch to enter because that’s the tricky part.
Oh yes!!! I’m going to use what she shared for my dc tutorial...it’s genius!!! 😘
Really good idea to not put pics of the kids on social media. I usually do that until I just recently included one of all of mine on FB and IG of our weekend fun. Good reminder though.
Thank you. Yes it’s so hard though because they are my little models (for my crochet, sewing etc) and it was so much fun including them in my posts. But once I remind myself of the reason why, it gets easier to let it go :) Safety first!
Good afternoon, Cynthia! when I was 20, I thought that in 30 years it is already old age 😂 now I think that 50 years is the beginning of life 😁 you have miraculously come out !! I'm glad that the girls share their projects with us
Haaa I love that Tala! Now I look forward to turning 50 with that in mind!! 😁😄
I am glad too! It’s so generous of them. It’s so great that we can try out their projects!
Happy birthday @crosheille!! ♥️
The cover photo of you using the start of this cardigan as a C is sooo cute!
Thank you so much for the Birthday wishes!!!
Yay I’m so glad you liked it! I was feeling creative lol!! 😄
It’s so great hearing from you. Geez I’m gonna stop by and see what you’ve been up to, it’s been too long. 😉❤️
Happy Birthday! And very nice needle work!!
Thank you so much for stopping in and wishing me a Happy Birthday!! So good hearing from you! 😊
I’m glad you like the needlework! 😃

Thank you!! 🤗
I’m having fun with this new project!!
Happy birthday and that's going to be a cute little cardigan!!!
I find sweaters for the little ones are often a really useful but surprisingly expensive thing to have - when you have a new baby lots of people give really nice afghans but the sweaters and cardigans often become the thing that is used to the wear-out point.
Thank so much!! I look forward to finishing it to show you all! 😊
I soooo agree! That is one of the reasons I wanted to make one. It seems we are always short when it comes to sweaters we need for our babies. This time I wanted to make a special one for her to grow with :) I will most likely make her more as she grows out of them! The joys of needlework!! 😉
It's such a freeing thing to be able to do stuff for yourself instead of having to search for it in stores!
I think that pattern looks really comfortable and straightforward - I've been finding really nice little sweaters at the secondhand store, but it's good to know I can turn one out myself if we run short along the way for one of the kids.
I agree it is so freeing. I love that we can make it fit to our preference with colors and style. This is why I am learning how to sew too. I want to do more projects where I combine crochet and sewing.
The pattern is very straightforward, it is working up so fast!
