Day 50

The developmental gap is finally coming to a head you could say. There's one tadpole that's a few days ahead of the rest developmentally speaking. The little one's head has begun slimming width-wise and their body has really started taking on a frog recognizable as a frog. I'd say the most developed tadpole is currently at Nieuwkoop and Faber stage 60. Over the next two stages, you'll see the whiskers shorten and begin to curve backward, the body will become more opaque, the limbs will thicken, and the head will become much more frog shaped as the tadpole transitions into a froglet. In terms of behavior, I notice more slower, deliberate movements being made by the soon to be froglet. This doesn't mean that the it's lost its speed, the tadpole is overall a bit faster than the others when it does want to move, it primarily uses its feet to swim, with the tail providing support. The tadpole has even developed little black claws on its hind limbs if you look closely at the tips of the toes!

Yesterday, I decided to test whether transitioning back to 30% water changes would be possible now that I places a bit of zeolite into the tank and saw a drop in ammonia occur after continuously rising despite daily 50% water changes. Today the water test results were clear, the ammonia level rose to from 0.25 - 0.5 ppm to 0.5 - 1 ppm (leaning towards 1 ppm). I'll need to go back to 50% water changes tomorrow and possibly the next day based upon further testing. I've also added a second bag of zeolite in order to give a us chance at reducing the water changes successfully next time. I know some used zeolite was accidentally placed into the fresh bucket rather than the used bucket, as a precaution, both times before I filled the zeolite bags, I mixed the container in order to avoid having too much concentrate in any one area (proportionally it was a small amount of used zeolite that was put back into the bucket).

You are doing a wonderful work and keep doing it. I have been seeing he posts raising tadpoles so I decided to read it now. I found it very interesting and your work pretty hard and impressive post.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, :) there'll be plenty of interesting changes to see in the over the course of the next week.

Did this monster eat the tadpoles? Nice work!
