Satla Beel: The Kingdom of Water Lily- The National Flower of Bangladesh

Last week we have been visiting the beautiful Satla village, the village renowned due the to Red Water Lilies. There are few Beel in the area and each Beel got Lilies.

You will feel joy whenever you will start to observe the green Beel from the little distance & soon you'll start to see the Red Lilies in the green bed!

White Water Lily became the national flower of Bangladesh and most commonly seen, but we are watching the Red one mostly here.

You need to be there before sunrise to observe the beautiful scenery and the Lilies. I've found three colours Red, White and off white Lilies but heard there are more colours! Generally the Lilies blooms during rainy season and you will find them till October. July to September is the best time to visit the area.

The way they collect Snails

It is easy to be there with Auto Bike or Easy Bike from Gournadi bus stop and if you like to travel from Barishal City it would take couple of hours (60 KM). The best option to start your journey just before Fazar Azan.

You'll see local people are collecting Snails and Lilies early in the morning with their little boat. If you request them they will help you roaming around with their boat and will cost little money. Walking between the Satla River & Beel will provide you great feelings, you will breathe fresh air and enjoy the beauty of mother nature.

Beel a large surface waterbody that accumulates surface runoff water through internal drainage channels; these depressions are mostly topographic lows produced by erosions and are seen all over Bangladesh. The term beel is synonymous to baor, and familiar in greater comilla, faridpur, dhaka and pabna districts. Beels are small saucer-like depressions of a marshy character. Many of the beels dry up in the winter but during the rains expand into broad and shallow sheets of water, which may be described as fresh water lagoons.Reference
