Eastern Great Egret (Ardea modesta)
This is the Eastern Great Egret (Ardea modesta). To us, it is a rather graceful and elegant looking bird. To a fish or a frog, it is a fearsome predator with a voracious appetite. In the video you will see how it stalks it prey and strikes with deadly accuracy.
This egret is considered by some to be a subspecies of the Great Egret (Ardea alba). There are various, large, egret species around the world so you may have seen similar birds in your area. Here in Tasmania they are more prevalent during the cooler months. I hope you enjoy the photos and video below.
