The Threatening Jumping Spider (Helpis minitabunda)
The Jumping Spiders (family Salticidae) are among my favourites. The photos below show the Threatening Jumping Spider (Helpis minitabunda). It is found in New Guinea, down the east coast of Australia (including Tasmania) and in New Zealand. I'm not sure where it gets it's name as they hardly seem threatening and it's bite is considered harmless. Another name for it is the Aussie Bronze Jumper. It is a small jumping spider with a body length or around 7mm. They are usually found on folliage. Indeed, the one in the video below was found on one of my Cymbidium orchids. As you approach them they will often hide on the opposite side of the folliage.
Look closely at this next one and you can see the web coming from the spinnerets.
...on the folliage of one of my Cymbidiums.
...and finally, here is a video I recorded of this spider.
Awesome!
